Default Brake Disc thickness

Kind of following on from a previous post about brake disc life expectancy, Ive just received the brake discs I got from eBay through the post. I've measured them and they are 5.1mm thick. The disc says min thickness 4.5mm. Anyone know what thickness they are (or could be) when new? The ebay add said they were from a very low mileage bike with v little wear.

Cheers

It would have to be very low millage for that thickness, are to mesuring it in the middle of the friction area and at several places around the disk. Idealy you need a micrometer for it.

I used vernier calipers. Yep I measured at four different places around the disc. Are you saying they are quite thick hence not used that much???

4.5mm stamped on the dics is recommended minimum thickness. Thickness from new varies on different bikes/discs. Those are probably 5mm new.

What did you used to measure the thickness? If there is no lipping on the discs or you have not included any if present then you done good.

Cheers
Ben

Verniers are probably not correct as they will mesure the lip of the disk being the thickest part of the disk.

Nah..Verniers should be fine. The upper part the the jaws have a gap built in which would miss any normal lipping.

Cheers

It depends on how large the gap is and the thickness on the other parts of the disk. But under most circumstances it should be fine.
