Default Argument with a Traffic Warden, and I was on foot !!

Had a couple of meetings in London today and went in by train. Typical of the "over preparer" that I am, I had 30 minutes in hand before my meeting and decided to grab a coffee in Starbucks on Baker St. There I am, looking out of the window watching these 2 Traffic Wardens walking up and down, paying a great deal of attention to the bike bay on the corner of a side street.

I finish my coffee and leave to see one of them writing a ticket for a largish wheel base Harley in the bay. With an '06 plate, I thought it unlikely to be untaxed, so decded to ask why they were giving it a ticket.
"Because it's outside of the bay"
"Eh ? It's about 5 feet from the line ?"
"No, it's wheel is outside the bay"

Now seeing as it had a fairly long wheelbase, the rear tyre was just over the line.... So they stuck a ticket on it. I tried to explain that all bike bays are the same size (well the same distance from the kerb) so what's he supposed to do ??

"Get a smaller bike!" was the answer.

I told him what I thought of him and got on my way.... Bunch of

No wonder nobody likes Traffic Wardens....

Sounds like a Jobsworth Bit like when disabled people display their blue badge upsidedown and then get a ticket

Have we really come to this, that people get a tickage for being a few inches over the line

We haven't had any wardens here for months, they all left with stress. But now we have an army of em, parking is now a civil not a criminal matter, so the council has recruited about 25 for Shropshire and they're going to rove around the county, I watch them from my office window giving warning notices to everyone, next week they start for real and the council has promised a snowstorm. Just as well the bike park's free

Yes. It's happened to me, my wheels were even inside the line... but my side stand wasn't.

3 traffic wardens are assaulted every day in London... not enough if you ask me.

i think its odd. I come from newcastle- barely ever seen a traffic warden. however in manchester i used to live in a residential area when the traffic wardens would come round a minimum of every 45 minutes. They're all over the place on ******* scooters! theres no way you can park anywhere in manc. without being spotted. Its a pity as the traffic problem is just as aparent in manchester as it is in newcastle despite their efforts. I don't think it would suprise anyone to learn these guys are on 'performance related pay'

Shocking about the traffic wardens...but what really concerns me is this:

I used to live next door to one and a thoroughly all round good bloke is he. He looks like your typical Santa Claus and every year he plays the role for local kids at a charity party.

I think lumping all traffic wardens together as bad eggs is a little unfair, yes, in this case it appears he was being a jobsworth. However where does tolerance stop, if the only part of the bike in the bay was the kickstand – is that OK? If a car was parked blocking all the bikes in, we would all be crying out “Where’s the Warden”. We can’t have it both ways.

If I were to spend my working day, being abused, shouted at and spat upon for doing my job, when I turn a blind eye to some wrongs and get no thanks, I think I and most people on this forum would harden and ticket anyone who broke the rules.

We don’t like it when we hear someone say all bikers are dirty stinking thugs, we should learn from this and take each case individually.
