Default Changing Chain and Sprockets

Apologies if this has been raised before but I'm in the middle of changing my chain and sprockets. I've done a quick search but didn't find an answer.

Undone front sprocket, removed rear wheel, and for some reason decided to look at the new rear sprocket supplied by Busters Motorcycle Accessories. It is a 45, looked at my back wheel and its a 44, checked Haynes manual and............ oops I didn't realise SV650 and SV650S had different chain and sprockets! Didn't even cross my mind to check! So of course I just put SV650 K3 on the order and have been sent a kit accordingly.

So I have a SV650S K3 with Front 15 (thats ok they're the same) with a 108 link chain and a 44 tooth rear sprocket. New kit 15 front 45 rear and 110 link chain.

Totally my fault for not specifying the S, so opinions please.

I need my bike Tuesday first thing. Do I re-fit and get correct set? Fit the bits that have (what difference will it make?) Send the kit back and nicely ask Busters to send me what I should have asked for in the first place?

If it's parts for the N model then it should be fine. It'll give you a little extra pull down below and less up the top end but it's only a very small change so I doubt it'll be anything dramatic. If anything, you'll probably prefer it.

Please don't take this for gospel though.

Cheers for that Instigator.

I'm wondering about the extra 2 links in the chain as well. I suppose I could remove the extra links. Easier to shorten than to lengthen

You seem to have been supplied with a complete kit for the N model. If so the longer chain will be fine as it is to compensate for the larger rear sprocket.I believe you can go up to a 46 tooth rear with that chain, but don't quote me on that.

Yeah that's exactly what I got. My own fault for not specifying the 'S'

I have fitted the 45t rear and the 110 link chain now. The chain adjusters are just 2 marks from the back with the longer chain.

Opinions now please for how long before I run our of adjustment and what I can do when it happens?

As long as the chain adjusts up OK with your setup then fine. You are short of longer term adjustment there it seems, and the reason will be that the N model has a fractionally longer swingarm than the S.(1 cm I think)Ride it and see what you think of the new lower gearing, and if you think it makes the bike more fun to ride think about getting a 46 tooth rear. That makes quite a noticeable increase in acceleration.

Could be a new trend. As your chain wears out don't adjust it,get bigger sprockets.

That could open up all sorts of possibilities!

"As my chain wears out my bike seems to accelerate quicker"

"Oh that'll be the extra tooth you keep adding to the rear sprocket instead of adjusting the chain"

I recently ordered a 46 rear & a 108 link chain. Not a problem.

You get more off the line, and sacrifice a little top end (who uses it anyway?), not as much as mine, but you'll get a little.

The only thing you've done differently is the 110 link chain, which means you'll have less adjustment later on that I will. Not a great deal IMO.
