Default Geek thread warning !!!!! Remote Desktop to (Debian) Linux.

You have been warned.

This has only been tested on Debian Linux by me, but may work with Debian bases distributions like Ubuntu. I am also using the Gnome environment so enabling remote desktops may be different in another window manager.

Anyways

1) Get the xrdp package from the Sourceforge project page

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/xrd...0.3.1_i386.deb

2) get the VNC4 packages with apt, along with any packages it downloads in addition.

apt-get install vnc4server

3) Enable Remote Desktop in Gnome -

Desktop => Preferences => Remote Desktop

Now you should be able to connect via remote desktop from your windows box.

It seems the option you need to use in the XRDP login box is "rdp-any" which will ask you for the ip address of the machine you want to log into, then ask for your username and password.

Been doing that for years on many linux desktops as work only runs MS Windows.
My 'secure setup' consists of ssh server and vncserver server on the linux box, with vnc viewer on the Windows machine plus putty to redirect vnc packets through an encrypted ssh tunnel.

Exactly what I do, just to talk to my machine at home.

Add to that public key logins so I automatically authenticate without user/pass interaction, and you use the same setup as me

And also all the extra overhead that comes with X via RDP? No thanks, sometimes my connection speed isn't the best. Streamlining is better, and can be done in vnc4server after connecting SSH, but before starting the GUI.

This has 1 major advantage (in my opinion) - Remote Desktop Client is STANDARD in XP and above.

No need to install PuTTY, set up Tunnelling, and install a VNC client. (hoops I have jumped through before)

One set of configuring (on the server) and thats it forever.

This may not be the best way of doing it - but its the easiest.
