I am currently having a very similar problem on my K3 as you can see here. And as you can see I am trying to find the reason also. Spooky though, two on the same day.

This could most likely be a bad connection between the sensor at the front wheel and the speedo. - follow wire up fom sensor on L.H.S. of front wheel and there is a snap connector ( under the screen on a faired) Part this carefully - do not pull on wires -and clean contacts with solvent - grease with silicone grease then reconnect.
All the above assumes later bikes are the same as my curvy.

I've also had similiar systems caused by low power or poor supply- once from a bad battery connection, and once from a faulty reg/reg causing the bike to run on 10V.

Freaky! Almost identical to this thread as creamy himself mentionned.

How I can do 289mph in a 2.0l Ford Galaxy at 2k RPM I have no idea, but I did, apparently. Maybe a really long run up, and a gearbox that has 700 gears...

Anyway, the cause was that the alternator was screwed. Hopefully it'll be cheaper than the £300 it cost me! Naturally, the bike might be a different part, but it's somewhere in the electrics, from the alternator through to the speed pickup to the dash, including any dodgy connections between them.

If it's the reg/rect/generator (aka alternator) setup, you'll soon find that your battery doesn't get charged. Fun fun.
