Sky Router & VOIP

hey people

just got connected to Sky and unfortunately the Netgear Router doesn't come with any VOIP ports.

Any ideas how to connect a standard phone to the router? Model is Netgear DG834GT

Install either a sip phone or an ata behind the router

You would then have to forward the sip and rtp packets to the sip phone or ata.

On the sip phone/ata you would then need to set the nat address to that of your sky address.

The above assumes you are running a NAT router and have a single address from sky.

Anyting more complicated such as you have been assigned a static address range and you want your voip device on that range, give me a pm

Personally, I'd stick an ATA gateway between the router & a normal phone.

You could, as tim said, use a SIP phone with RJ45 capability. But for the cost, I personally wouldn't.

Yeah I knew it did NAT, but I think it also does static routing. This is the mode that I operate my brothers ADSL router in, as I then have a proper (Nokia/checkpoint) firewall behind it. His 2 sip phones are connected to the ADSL router on static addresses as he has a /29 subnet mask from his supplier and not behind the firewall. Therefore there are no requirement for forwarding rules. nat traversal, proxy or stun servers etc

If 600+ is not actually using the nat mode and has static addresses available . I would have suggested he allocates those to whatever VoIP device he installs.

cheapest ATA I found on the net would be around £40

but found this on ebay - will it do the job?

It looks ideal. Similar to the grandstream device I use.

You would need to buy a small adapter to connect your BTtype telephone connection to the rj11 socket.

Good it also has a lifeline type connection. This you would connect to your BT socket. In that way you can choose to route calls either over VoIP or by your landline. you can also pick up incomming bt calls on that handset as well.

The only issue is how long your dhcp address stays. In my case with telewest I have had the same address for the past 3 years so semi static and I also use a freedns dynamic update for my gateway address

i reckon it stays the same until I reboot the router

with this device I assume I would need to put my VOIP login details on it somewhere on the interface?

You normally have a web interface to configure it. What VoIP provider do you use

i'd be using voipbuster cause I only want it to make calls
