Got a SV650 S-Y. I want to upgrade my lights and horn but hear stories of fried electrics, any chance the whole SV electrics can be upgraded to something abit more powerful.

Something not made of cheese usually helps, I really dislike SV wiring...
More powerful lights can be done, but make sure it doesn't draw more than the alternator can supply. Just look at what other people have done. As to horns, the switch isn't that meaty, so the best way is to use a relay and hide it under the tank somewhere, as the horn is only used intermittently the battery can cope with being drawn on for this so you don't have to worry so much about power ratings, maybe add some nice beefy wire up to the relay and from there down to the horn.

Doesn't beefy wire increase resistance? More the lights issue I was thinking of and perhaps uprated coils.
Can the altenator be upgraded, perhaps rewound, or even change for a more powerful unit? A solution might be to just upgrade one light, as say 1 60 watt bulb is brighter than 2 X 35 watt bulbs is it not? Opions always welcome. Last edited by BigBaddad; 01-09-07 at 08:31 PM. |

You can run a fair bit off the standard charging system, don't worry about it. The problem is that it's not all that reliable, more than that it lacks capacity. You can run, frinstance, a pair of sensibly higher watted bulbs and a pair of heated grips without any worries whatsoever.

No, smaller wire increases resistance. The bigger the wire, the less resistance, and the less power wasted as heat. |
