You could do the distance no problem, with only the aid of an iron **** and lack of sense, but the miles get a bit compressed once you're into scotland, and cornwall for that matter. Covering ground in the north always takes longer than you expect.

You don't want to trust the grapevine - the guy who attempted it on a 500 quid CX500 didn't even make it out of Scotland. The only one of the three who managed it was Simon Hargreaves, on a BMW R100. In well over 12 hours. And Simon knows what he's doing, which, from the rest of your post, I have to assume is not the case with you.

Then its lands end back to my place for a lot of sleep which is an easy ride and not actually that far. This is a total of just over 1800 miles but i may start and end in birmingham if can arrange a place to stay which would cut the best part of 150 miles off the journey. Either way its a challenge and im not even 100% im going to attempt it but i think it can be done.
You've really no idea! Do you realise that it's 300 miles from Glasgow to John O'Groats? That's 300 miles of rural Scottish roads - no dual carriageway, no street lights and few fuel stops. That's the bit you should worry aboout, not the easy-ish 150 miles from Exeter (end of the M5) to Land's End, much of which is dual carriageway now. Your "hit the top ASAP and back into the UK (sic) before nightfall" shows just how little idea you have. (BTW - Scotland *is* in the UK).

Seriously, the odds of doing *any* 1800 mile journey (even round and round the M25) within 24 hours in the UK are slim, let alone *this* 1800 mile journey.

I was about to accuse of being quite young (and therefore forgivably ignorant), but then again I was only 22 or so when I set the record, and I spent weeks preparing for it, with pre-planned fuel stops, a calculated average, spare fuel, etc. It's a challenge all right, and I bet you don't even try it once you realise how little you understand of what it takes.

Hey hey now, don't discourage him! Just take a video camera Adrian and then we can all see you manage it. Or fail miserably. Either one will be amusing and entertaining viewing so its win win for us observers!

By the way they are right about small roads eating up your time. We got quite behind on our Eastern Europe trip when roads that look straight on your map turn out to be hairpins all the way, and the best you can manage has dropped from 90 mph in a straight line to 30 mph over a distance that is probably tripled thanks to the bends.

Oh and champ, if you are bored at work, you can check out the writeup I did of our 3500 mile trip to Bosnia if you like . http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=116504
I liked the article on your trip, sounds like a real crazy experience! Icertainly wouldn't want to attempt it myself, I have the utmost respect for anyone doing huge miles, as even after doing 400 km or so on our longer days my head was swimming and my **** hurt. Or maybe that was the beer...

The reason that the bit at the end heading down to lands end is the hard bit is because of the exhaustion. I can happily do 600 miles of hard riding and still have my brain working. Doing 1500 is a completely different matter. Riding for 12 hours isnt hard, once you hit 18 or 20 then you really start to nottice it.

As for doing it in 24 hours, its a target time, doesnt mean its going to happen. I want to do it in 1 stint without any prolonged stops, so no sleeping, no proper meals etc.

You might think its silly, your welocome to think that but I think its doable and the only way to prove this is to do it.

Given that the entire proposed trip is "in the UK", it makes no sense to me.

Only if you think of it as 'well away from the coast' as being 'well into the UK'

When you stand at john o'groats you're on the edge of the UK by anyone's terms, when you reach Birmingham you're further in. It's a very simple concept tbh.
