A good mechanic should know how long a particular job will take and quote appropriately. Maybe I'm just being naive. Basically he said he gave me advice before he started and I didn't take it. I asked.. "what advice was that?"... he said that balancing the carbs may not "improve" how it was running. I said that I DID take that advice and decided to give it a shot anyway. I told him that if he had told me before hand that there was a chance he would make make my engine worse, then there is no way in hell I would have paid him to "give it a go".
Anyway... a few bucks poorer but a bit wiser I think. Lesson learnt...
IF YOU WANT IT DONE RIGHT.... DO IT YOURSELF!!!

Take it to another Garage and get a second opinion & quote.
Get them to fix it and send the bill to the original garage and threaten with T/Standards if no refund.

What a w4nker. This problem you have does not sound like improperly balanced carbs. Even if there was a problem, then the carbs being balanced wouldn't make it worse. If the carbs were grossly out of balance then surely said mechanic would have noticed.

Thanks for the offer mate, but I don't think I'd be able to get it that far.
