I use one rule I use with everything, don't buy the latest and greatest as your just get all the bugs and problems that go with it. But what you do buy try to ensure its future proof.
I have a non brand router I bought on ebay about 6 years ago (£35), its on 11Mbit wireless but then my broadband is only 4 Mbits. It does WEP 64/128bit, WPA-PSK and even allows me a DMZ for my Xbox 360 so I can get all the live working. Keeps me happy... |

If that is the case can I suggest you bin the router and get a dial-up modem, you should get at least 44 bits now

When you set it up do a scan for other wireless networks in range, your neighbour might have one running for example. If so, note the channel number of the other networks and choose a channel number at least five away (so if there are two other networks, one on channel 1 and one on channel 11, you use channel 6).
And please for the love of god secure it, that means hide the SSID and use encryption, preferably WPA, or failing that WEP128. NetStumbler is a nice little free app (netstumbler.com) that shows wireless networks, APs and security settings of nearby networks. |
