Nah, for the cost of getting an SV up to 100bhp you could go and buy a TL.

What do you mean by drill the airbox?

Some full systems are good, and some are solely designed to offer you a loud can without cutting your OEM pipework. The best exhausts for Curvy's are unfortunately the more expensive ones; out of the more commonly available systems, LeoVince, Yoshimura, and Akrapovic have good results with lightly tuned engines. I am currently running the 800 with the Akrapovic system from the 650, feels good but I am yet to put it on a dyno to see if it is strangling the engine by much.

Also bear in mind that it's not all about absolute flow, a bit more back pressure will give a little more midrange. Especially with hot cams.

Erm ...drill it ...does it actually do nothing? I thought drilling a few say 5 mil holes in your airbox was the cheapskates tank riser. It seemed to make sense, more fuel (jets), more air (box drilled), more out (zorst). I tried to do it with a 125 but the carbs were so knackered I couldn't rejet it so put tape back over the holes and sold it lol. Told you guys I'm a .

hmm Are we agreed it's just not worth paying more for a full system over a decent can? The other reason I like full systems is I think curvy SV's look shed loads better with a high level exhaust. I'm not thinking for this bike but for future bikes really. But I've also got to check how mines running when it's back on the road as it's got a full system on (unsure if it was upjetted when fitted) and it's restricted!!

Teh fook? You'd be drawing unfiltered air into motor. Not good, don't do it unless it's a race motor running open bellmouths and you're prepared to rebuild it a lot. (but if you were building that sort of motor, you wouldn't need to ask someone like me about it)

Nah it's not worth the hassle, unless you get one cheap and like to mess with stuff. A decent can isn't worth the money either, they all do the same thing.

haha! In fairness to myself it was a pan type airbox so the carb hole was below the filter and I drilled it above the filter, infact I held it up to the light and drilled it where the filter wasn't clogged for better flow (and then replaced the filter).

Aye I might just leave it then on me next'n. Made me feel like a plonker though!

+ 1, it is not a cheap mans tank raiser but more of a stupid mans tank raiser.

A full systm isn't worth getting unless you want to tune the engine or it is cheap, if you want the noise then fit a slip-on (you can get them high level). The budget full systems don't offer anything over the OEM down pipes.

I'd resorted to desperate measures...have you ever had a go on a 4t 125?!

Got a vid on youtube for you

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=97eB8Vha-Uc

It is road legal, centre stand stop is there, I didn't drill the cat cause it doesn't add any performance.

The others pretty much covered it... As cost vs results it's a bit rubbish, you either need to lash out for dyno time or spend a lot of saddle time doing the setup by butt dyno (which will probably still need confirming on a real dyno, getting the low speed fuelling right is really tricky). All for just a few bhp. Cams work better- similiar results and much quicker and easier to fit.

You can remove the snorkel from the filter, which I think might be what you were thinking of when you say drill the airbox? The filter basically has a restrictive tube and a lid on it, which can be removed and makes things flow a lot better.

Obviously I'm not going to say "Don't tune your SV", mine shows you can get good results in the garage with basic tuning and a bit of an investment of time, without jeopardising the reliability or going further into the motor than the pistons. And I'm not just talking peak power, which is just for dyno liars, you don't need to sacrifice rideability. Mine with its mild tune can pull away at idle, hits working power early, and barely loses power between peak and redline, which makes it so much easier to ride than a standard one (If I ride a standard SV now, I stall at the first 5 sets of traffic lights, guaranteed ) I discovered on track that I can come out of the hairpin at Knockhill 2 gears too high and still outdrag a mid-90s CBR, for instance. But, at the end of the day it's still a sub-80bhp small capacity v-twin.

But it doesn't really make much sense, I just like monkeying about with these things. Tuning an SV motor is a bit daft
