Hmm, when they bought Dali's Christ of St John on the Cross for the (then) huge sum of £8200 for Glasgow, the whole place went mad... The director got abused in the street, protests outside the gallery, the whole deal. "Terrible waste of public money" "Should spend it on schools". The painting was even attacked and damaged by protestors. Course, it's paid for itself 20 times over with reproduction rights, even before you think how many people have travelled to the museum to see it. At the time it seemed like madness, now it's seen as one of the smartest moves in british art history.

In this case, people say "50 million for a painting" but it's not just one painting, the purchase secures the rest of the collection. And it's thought that the collection may already bring in as much 50 million to the economy of scotland annually as a tourist attraction- now they've got the collection for another 21 years, which if that figure is even remotely accurate makes this a money maker.

50 million's a huge amount of money, but it's not as simple as it looks. Me, I know nothing about art, but it does have boobies in. And when it comes to teh crunch, I'm always going to be on the side with the boobies.

Are you avin' a larf??? How is this £50m calculated, and as the painting is already there, how can it bring in more sums?

I have some original stuff, Cornish artists mainly, my fave being a pair of Robert Jones sea pictures off Falmouth. But like Lorna, £50m would buy a lot of Robert Joneses...
