Checker plate will still get a bit slick when its wet. Not as bad as wood but still slippery. I would recommend some small gauge expanded metal mesh ( also known as diamond mesh ). You can probably get a small sheet from B&Q or Homebase. Fix it in place with some screws with large washers on and it should do you okay. HTH
