Thats the problem with having Fair Weather riders and putting up with being fobbed off with tat.

My k5 started for the first time in 2 weeks no probs...couldn't find the choke and not a carbed ice in sight
eyh....

Grinch is on his GT not his SV

My bike is a K1 so its not got any warranty

As for my bike last night it was sat out in the cold all night, it must have been into minus figures this morning, I knew what the problem was and I just rode round it.

No I'm not.. the SV does play up.. but nothing like my GT.. with 4 carb's to Ice up.... and they sit a bit back from the engine and tend to get very cold.. maybe I should try and warm the air coming in to the bike???
I did think about covering the carbs in lagging or something...

I've waiting on a reply from Sid as he's had 7 gts

When I stopped I notice frost on my carbs.. covering them with a towel might help a bit... bit harder to reach on a SV.

I didnt really look to be honest, I just thought that'll be carb icing then and I hoped that it would thaw out whilst I filled up with fuel, which it seemed to do.

I think I'll see how it goes on the optimax before I do anything else

I wonder how difficult it would be to heat incoming air using some sort of hair dryer element and a thermostat/switch...?

I'd love something like that on my gsxr, its a real pain.

Carb Icing has more to do with moisture in the air and quality of fuel as well as temp. I think any heating elements would only be a very minor solution.

Fuel Injection. The key.

The only solution would be additives and/or the more expensive fuels.

yep the problem is the air coming in forced in to the carbs drops in temp, and then freezes in the jets or something. Plus if the carbs are cold to start with this effect is made worse.. if you can warm the air going in to the filter or warm the carb bodies to keep the temp up then the carb icing will go away. When you stop the whole effect goes straight away as your not drawing in the air. The more you push the bike the worse it gets. Though I did find if I really pushed the speed right up enough warm air cam off the engine to heat everything up.
Well I think thats how it all works....

I thought of this question yesterday.

Whats better then?

low revs to reduce the amount of air you draw in?

high revs to increase the engine temperture and surrounding air?

My bike seemed to run better with high revs this morning

It really didnt want to idle and popped and hesitated when pulling in the higher gears

Well thats my excuse and I am sticking to it
