how much free play does the throttle have?

if you fully open the throttle and let go goes it 'snap back' quickly?

The throttle itself comes back quick enough. The revs however are slow up/slow down

sounds like its only firing on 3 cylinders ..

does the revs suddenly go up and down when its ticking over?

does it sound 'lumpy' when its ticking over?

You're exactly right Bibio. At least speaking to you guys has given me a better idea of what to say to them. I just wish I knew what they have done to mess it up so badly. I hope they don't try to tell me "it was like that when we got it".

Petrol in the exhaust is worrying me

dodgy plug

coil collapsing or connector not connected properly

loose plug cap, not screwed into the ht lead properly

i would go for the plugs. although it might have had new plugs.. you do get the odd duff one.

If they had made a hack of balancing the carbs would that cause fuel to get through into exhaust? Or is that more likely a symptom of a bad plug?

the carbs would have to be wayyyyyyyy out. if a plug is not firing the excess petrol goes only one way .. out and into the exhast...
