dont get me wrong bike could do another 15 k problem free, but its unlikely

You might want to tell that to the guy that's done over 200K miles on his CBR600F.

There is no reason at all that the engine in this SV shouldn't be good for at least double it's current mileage if it's looked after. I'm really not sure where this deluded belief that bike engines are likely to go bang after 30-40k come from, but I suppose we should thank the deluded for the plentiful supply of cheap higher mileage bikes around.

EDIT: Just wondering - do the people that worry about high mileage not bother servicing their bikes?

I'm not sure it would be easy to find a mint VFR at £1400. My brothers mint V registered VFR800Fi with £17k miles was bought 3 years ago for £3k and is still worth over £2k and not depreciating much anymore. If a mint VFR was going for £1400 I'd be getting suspicious over why it was so cheap.

The advice is sound in principal however, and I agree that I'd be adding the price of this bike to the money you are going to have to spend to straighten it up, lets say £1400 quid, then go shopping for something older, but lower mileage and clean and straight, with service history and clean HPI if possible (not necessarily main dealer stamps on the service history, nothing wrong with home servicing, so long as the owner has kept records and receipts for all the parts used)

Honda VTR's are in that price range

Dont forget that if you can gather £1400 quid, at this time of year you can look at bikes advertised at up to £1800 and knock them down.

Or go and offer this private seller £900 when he's just had the cost of xmas and is just going into January, the of the longest month of the year financially, http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/bi...R-NXGN-7554013 it looks like a much better bet than that SV!

you have PM kelly

regarding mileage I thought someone on here had a curvy with 140,000miles clocked up.

I do think that 1300 for a K3 SV irrespective of recorded damage is a bit steep though, for 1300 id be defo wanting no damage and lower miles. ---- but I am from Yorkshire

if your talking about the clutch problems a freind i know who is a bike mechanic had a sv1000 dont no which year had strange rattle which got worse, turned out to be the clutch drum the sprung shock absorber bit at rear,he could get it a mod dune to it which means sending it of to be repaired but splashed out on new clutch drum, last time i saw him some 20+k later had sold bike as it had then started to rattle again and did not want to spend several 100 pounds doing the same repair,he told me when it first started rattleing it was a known problem on sv1000 so much so there are people who do mods to your old clutch and even mod a new one in the hope it will stop it happening, there endeth the sermon

Alarm bells are ringing here for me , If I see damage to a tank then I take it that the frame had been bent , especially if there is not much actual cosmetic damage . People say things like "his balls hit the tank" and other such guff , in reality the frame flexes upon impact and the tank crinkles like a Mr Kipling Pie Tin . It may have only flexed a tad in which case it will return to it`s original state if not stressed too far , if it does go too far it will have weakened at the point of stress and MAY crack or be deformed in extreme cases . The sub frame also suggest something a little more iffy ............ walk away Kelly , you can do better than that for not much more , don`t let the lure become too much .

Don't know about the SV1000 clutch, but every bike has it's known problems, or things that you change early, or check regularly and ignore at your peril, and if you have to spend a few hundred quid on a repair or replacement every 40k miles, that's not unreasonable IMO. That's all part of maintaining a bike. Keep on top of it and spend the money when it's needed and a bike will run forever.

Pete and Lissa's Ducati has outlived it's original crankcases and had a complete engine rebuild, and it's back on the road for another 10's of thousands of miles. If your prepared to spend the time and money on any vehicle you can keep it running forever. My brother in law has a 26 year old Opel Kadett (Astra) and it runs sweet as a nut.
