As you know KJ I paid £1500 for my 19k mile SV1000 which had been down the road but had been repaired to a rideable condition and given a new MOT - so personally I would say that bike is way overpriced.

The advice is sound in principal however, and I agree that I'd be adding the price of this bike to the money you are going to have to spend to straighten it up, lets say £1400 quid, then go shopping for something older, but lower mileage and clean and straight, with service history and clean HPI if possible (not necessarily main dealer stamps on the service history, nothing wrong with home servicing, so long as the owner has kept records and receipts for all the parts used)

Honda VTR's are in that price range

If thats what you can get for the same price, I'd go with the Honda the 1000 twins appear to be bombproof

People say things like "his balls hit the tank" and other such guff , in reality the frame flexes upon impact and the tank crinkles like a Mr Kipling Pie Tin . It may have only flexed a tad in which case it will return to it`s original state if not stressed too far , if it does go too far it will have weakened at the point of stress and MAY crack or be deformed in extreme cases . The sub frame also suggest something a little more iffy
Starting with the subframe - it's gone down hard enough on the right to take a chunk out of the exhaust, so it's highly likely that the subframe is bent at the point the footrest hanger bolts to the subframe. This is a free and easy repair, just heat the thing up and bend it straight again.

Next, the fuel tank - you obviously havent looked at the photos. There is damage consistent with something dropping on the top of the tank, and this damage looks older than the crash damage. I'd agree with frame flexing and rippling tanks if the back of the tank had a 'boll0ck dent', but only if it had been subjected to a full frontal crash... this bike has been dropped on its side, not hit on the front.

I'm so glad there are people like you around, you leave people like me free to buy bikes like this and make a tidy profit from them after proper repairs have been done.

Kelly - if the mileage wasn't as high I'd have bought this one, fixed it up and turned it round as a profit maker. As it is the damage is minimal and it could be made rideable for less than 50 quid but it's still too damaged to make it financially viable.

Buying the bike at £1295 then adding a used pair of cans (the left is damaged too), fuel tank repair, fairing replacement/paint and all those other smaller bits add up to more than you'd pay to buy a good condition straight bike that's not on HPI and has far lower mileage. I wouldn't bother if I were you, it's the mileage that would make it difficult to recover your money back because too many people won't buy a bike with more than 20K on the clock and to be honest it doesn't look like it's been particularly well loved. While the engine may go on for ever (big miles don't bother me) you'd probably need to budget for a few other consumables like steering head bearings and shock linkage bearings as well as painting up all the corroded bits like the subframe and forks etc.

Take my advice, find a different undamaged and better loved bike.

I did not say that had happened to this bike , you have obviously not read my post properly , I was offering general advice to somebody that does not know as much about damaged repairables as most on here . The Thread Title says "your thoughts please" .... not "Tell me exactly what happened to this bike in every tiny detail"

Wow, so much input!! I really appreciate your views on this.

TBH I dont want a bike thats road worthy, I want a bike thats road worthy and pretty.
Having read with interest all your thoughts on this I think i'm going to pass on it.

I cant get to see it and even if i did i dont have enough knowledge to know the TRUE state of it. Im sure to some of you more experienced peeps something like heating the subframe and bending it back to correct shape would be a mornings work but i dont have the tools or the know-how.

If it was going to be a case of a few new bolt on fairings and cans then i would be very tempted but from everything you've said i suspect its going to need a bit more than i can give, in knowledge and money.

When i get another bike its got to be a keeper so i need to be confident its not a money pit, with this one im not so sure so the sensible thing is to pass.

Thanks again for taking the time to offer up your opinions, its been a really interesting read and definitely given me something to think about.

Dont those first 2 statements contradict the third?

Considering recent experiance then any catagory recorded damaged knocks a lot more off the value than the mileage does.
Like others have said when buying obviously I'd prefer lower miles but I wouldnt consder 48000 so many that I'd never touch it, I'd just expect the price to reflect it, in this case I dont think the price does. Which for different reasons brings us to the same conclusion, dont buy it.
