Its like a management system rather than just to buy songs! Give up on doing it the same way as your android! It's really not that difficult to use iTunes to upload onto an iPhone!

she got it as the salesman told her it was the easiest to use. (probably translate to best commission to him) and is stuck with it. She already wants to take it back and get a Galaxy S4

Tim, stop thinking in terms of android, it is different (I'm not saying better/worse)
you need to install iTunes, think of it as a management tool for the iPhone, it is a media player too, so the media player has a list of all your songs, you can choose specific songs or artists or playlists. you tell it which you want to sync to the phone and it will send them across. Again it is different, better in some ways, worse in others.

I hated it at first but I quite like that I can have my media library listed with nice album art and named correctly and such but it also does dynamic playlists so I have one that updates each time I sync for top 50 songs last month so I can just hit play that and I'll get a selection of whatever I've played in the last month.

Another saying itunes. Sorry but that is a windows application. My servers are Linux and Solaris. I have a works windows laptop but that is locked down, the USB does not work and I have no ability to install any software.

We feel she was missold the phone. she was told it would do everything she needs. Now it would appear she needs to buy a computer in order to download her music to it.

Other things work ok on it, she is able to get her email. I need to try to install a soft sip phone on it so she can talk pick up her house phone (Yes we use voip at home) when out.

biggest problem we have is trying to set up secondary phones in her contacts, when we add them, you tap on the secondary number and it goes to text, even though you have selected phone.

It isn't just a Windows app, its Mac also but pretty likely not available for Linux. But that's how it is with Apple devices, I guess the proportion of user base that needs/wants to do what you are attempting is so small they don't give a damn. Admittedly, 'most' iPhone users have no desire at all to plug their device into Linux and drag MP3s to it.

But, it is what it is.

Thinking about it, will it work the other way round. Is there a way she could copy directories containing mp3s over the net from a NFS or Samba share onto her iphone?

Sorry Tim, didn't see the Linux only part, may I suggest WINE?
looks like linux dev community doesn't support iphone (at least the non jailbroken kind) I'd use vmware workstation or something of that ilk to emulate a compatible OS. Once using one of those the iPhone does play nice and is neat but I'm not trying to convert you.

I think it horrid that you need to install an application that will take over your desktop, decide how you will manage your music etc. Just to install music onto a phone.

why oh why cannot I simply copy the music directories from my nas onto a phone???? Having to use a manufacturers application that I have no control over what it does and what ever spy/bloat ware it requires seems so 20th century.

I will finish my apple moan here and let you apple geeks delight in the fact I cannot see anything remotely smart in an iphone.

Give iTunes a try, it's not nearly as sinister as you imagine. Honestly.
