Default Oil Change Scare

Just an observation....
Changed oil and filter yesterday. Used Castrol GPS 10-40W - semi-synthetic - looks like undiluted Ribena. All going well - refilled to 1-2mm below the MAX line and started her up. After a few worrying metalic sounding clunks on initial start up that disappeared within 2-3 seconds I let her run for approx 2 mins to get my new lovely lube into all the nooks and crannies.
Stopped the engine - had a coffee - went to recheck the level - NOTHING !!! the level wasn't even visible at the bottom of the sight glass and that's quite a bit lower than the MIN level marker ! Where's all my new investment gone ?
Anyway - after intiial thouhts that I must have forgotten to put the sump plug in were dispelled (dry garage floor) - the obvious thing to do was to keep putting oil in till the level re-appeared - which eventually it did.
so.........strange that before start up - level was nearly full and after a few mins warm up - level had significant dropped. Does the filter really hold that much ?

No, but the sight glass and the filler hole are on the same engine case, you have to allow for the oil to get to the other parts of the engine, which it'll only do after running it, you'll find in the book it'll say something like, fill it, start and run it for a moment to circulate, then check level again, hten run to temp.

If you look at a filter,it probably needs about 250ml to fill it up.Then add on those nooks and cranny bits around the engine and there's your extra oil.

A quick tip, put oil into the filter before fitting it. Helps to get oil round the engine quicker
