Default Lock set question

MY 2001 naked ignition lock is getting a little temperamental. Used to stick once in a while, now it takes more and more jiggling to get it to turn. Guess I am looking for a new lock set. These seem to be about £150 for a set (ignition, tank and pillion seat) from a main dealer, but I was wondering about getting a second hand set from a breakers.

Does anyone know if other Suzuki sets are compatible with the K1 SV?

Anyone know how hard a job it is to swap them over and if you need any special tools?

Or better still, is there a standard fault with these that is very easy to fix without the need to replace them at all?

Cheers,
Mark

The lockset is slightly more than that (I think about £165-170), but yes they do wear out, generally if you incert the key then push it up (towards the front of the bike) it'll turn.

Buying from a breakers is a bit hit & miss as you don't know how long before the set you buy is going to go the same way still if funds are a bit tight give it a go.

You'll need a security torx bit to remove the ignition lock, but the tank (phillips screw)and seat (spring clip) locks are straight forward.

Cheers Mark.

To get your ignition off you will need to remove the top yoke and you will need a set of torques bits the ones with the holes in to get it off!!

So are these common across other Suzukis or specific to the SV? If I take the ebay/breakers gamble, worth knowing if I can widen my search beyond SVs.

Thanks for the info so-far.

Probably some others, but the seat lock might be tricky.

Or a screwdriver & hammer to get rid of the 'pin' that makes it a security bit

All in all, not terribly secure. Hate those things. It's M8xnotmuch if you want to replace them with real bolts. They're threadlocked too, so bit of a recipe for damage if you're not careful.

For various reasons I actually own a set of security sockets so can undo torx with pins, triangular things and widgets with two holes either side of a ridge. So in theory this should not be too hard once I've managed to secure another lock set.

Are you sure the top yoke needs to come off as that the only bit that worries me. I make a point of avoiding messign with steering, stopping or other critical bits. If it runs like a dog or does not start, it's generally not an issue. However if it doesn't stop, steer or hold together it's a whole lpot more dramatic.
