Ok, question.

If you have speed camera locations for your Tom Tom, do they sit in thier own directory, or within a directory?

I have 'acquired' the 2007 camera locations and need to know where to put them on the memory card on my girlfirends satnav.

ta in advance

From memory, it's handled basically as a "favourites" location, but I haven't got my PDA on me (only really use it for GPS) so can't double check where exactly.

Also, on the PDA version there's a seperate application to run that warns you for a given type of "favourite" (eg Gatso) if it will be on your route and gives numerous warnings for different distances (configurable for speed too!).

For example, anything greater than 70mph, I get a warning 2miles before any type of speed camera. This allows me safe time to slow down , basically a "wakey wakey, speed camera!" Then I get another warning, irrespective of speed at half a mile. This time it's an alarm bell sound (old WWII style air raid alarm actually). Then with 400m to go, it tells me the PROBABLE speed limit for the type of road I'm on, vocally and displayed on screen.

You put them in the same directory as your map so storage card/UK_and IE_plus major_roads

Assuming you have the same version of TomTom as me of course 6.010 with maps

Also there is a new release of the speed camera files every month. You then have choices as whether you wish to install a merged file or individual 30,40,50,60,70 cameras etc. The advantage of the merged file is that it is a single fil. with the individual files you can set the alert distance dependant upon speed. ie 200 yards for a 30 but maybe 500 yards for a 70 etc.

I use my pda/tomtom on the bike with an ear piece to give me speed camera alerts. Half the fun on a bike is finding new routes

Way better than maps! Interesting looking road? Just ride it and the GPS will update your route. Want to make a time-efficient journey? Let it plan your fuel stops.
I don't know if the Zumo is really worth an extra £200 over the Tomtom though?

Is it on the latest firmware updates? There was a problem with the Garmin i3 a while back where they were releasing updates that caused problems and people were dashing around for the older versions. If it's locking up on the latest version try an older one, if it's not on the latest version try the newer one - have a look at www.pocketgpsworld.com

I've just updated it on Saturday, but I've not tested it yet, so, we'll see

The big problem with Sat Navs is that it's easy to trust them too much - how many of us have blindly followed our sat nav when we're sure it's quicker/easier to stay on until the next junction, or we're sure there's another way, or wasn't that a sign back there that we didn't pay attention to because the sat nav is doing the work.

They're good guides, and going somewhere unknown they'll always beat a map. They'll never be faster than someone with local knowledge though - they can't take into account roadworks, how busy roads get at certain times of day, etc. (they can't yet, anyway - just a matter of time) but the point of a gps isn't to replace your knowledge it's to supplement it.
