In fact one person I know has clocked up over 10,000 miles in 7 months!
Don't hold back Kate, say what you mean why don't you

Kate, I was young once you know... Take somebody who has been riding a 33bhp IL4. The fact that they have a restricted licence means that they are under 21. Consider also that to make it go anywhere they have had to wring its neck. Now put that person on 100+bhp and let them ride off into the great unknown.

The difference between a restricted and non restricted SV is not such a large margin, especially when you consider the differences in engine characteristics. I hope you can see my point.

Being the father of a scooter riding 18 year old I see how he has become complacent about his riding, and believe me, I'm his biggest critic, so it's not like I just let him get on with it... And he's not stupid, just young. In my opinion, letting somebody "that young" go from 33bhp to over 100 overnight without supervision, is not a good idea.

But it is only my opinion. You may feel it's crap, I don't, and when you have children you may feel different.

Not necessarily, I was 29 with a restricted licence and had over 10 years road experience. Someone I know is in her late 40s and has a restricted licence.

Lol, I'm not known for being subtle

Now the idea of someone aged say 17/18 jumping straight onto a restricted big bike (any bike) is not a great thought as accidents are more likely to happen due to lack of road experience and the invincibility bubble some people have at that age. Some, not all. But this is no different to a restricted SV as far as I'm concerned.

Surely its better than having them ride around on a unrestricted bike on a restricted licence?

Sorry Kate, I don't understand.

Why would you be on a restricted licence at 29 ?

Surely if you pass your test when you are 21 or older, you get full entitlement. I can understand that somebody took their test at 20 years 9 months and had to wait 2 years from that (well, can't understand it, but it's feasible). But even then, you would have completed 2 years by the age of 23, so you'd have a full ticket.

Have I misunderstood how the licensing rules work ??

Only if you pass on a big bike. If you pass on a 125 then you're restricted.

pointless? nah i doin't think so

If i was after a restricted bike i would do it purely for financial reasons
What does a new gixxer6 cost? £7k? right so lets have a think about it, instead of the gixxer you spend £4,500 on a restricted SV that leaves you with £2500 out of your £7000

2 years down the line your restiction is up and you still want a gixxer 6 say theyre still £7k

you've got £2500 in the bank and then you part ex your sv in for say £3k for example that means your £1500 short of your gixxer. If you'd got the gixxer in the forst place you wouldn't have lost money.

As for the power thing well same scenario resticted sv then jumpo onto a gixer6 so still going from 33bhp to 100+ so no difference really except you wont be used to the handling of the gixxer6

I jumped onto a Daytona 955i around about 130/140 bhp form my 70bhp sv, did i crash or have any near misses in the first few weeks? No i didn't and anyone who knows me will know i'm not the most sensible on 2 wheels (or 4 for that matter)

It depends on what you take the test on. I did my test on a 125 therefore I had a restricted licence which is why I had a restricted SV. Plenty of people over the age of 21 do restricted licences as its easier to pass a test on a 125. Personally, the CB500 they put me on for the DAS was too tall for me and I kept dropping it, so I did my test on a 125. I later passed the full test on a lowered CBF500. Other people I know don't feel confident doing a test on a big bike and would rather stick to a 125 to do the test and keep on a restricted bike for a few years.
