Can anyone tell me how long I will need to leave the bike on to charge the battery back up? The AA will obviously help me get it started again, but that is no good to me unless I can get it started tomorrow morning as well!

Not a good idea.

This pic is a real situation we had to attend to where someone had connected bike - car. Another 3 or 4 cars (can't remember exact details now) were also burned out

How did that happen? Technically there is no reason why you cant connect the bike and car battery together. Apparently the car alternator can blow the fuse on the bike as it produces too much electricity (dont quote me on that though) which is why you need to do it when the car is switched off. So long as bike and car are 12v then all should be well.

I guess if you were stupid enough to connect the + to - terminals then that would short the batteries out. Maybe that is what caused this?

Thats the crap bit. The dealer doesnt have a battery in stock and wont have one till thursday. It will then take them a day to test my battery before authorising a new one and they wont lend me a bike.

I have bought a battery charger to see if I can recover the battery for this week, but I cant understand why it lost so much charge since Sat.
