It's an oil pressure light, not an oil level light, when your oil pressure drops it's already too late.

Is there an easy way to stick a pressure gauge in the same tapping?

That's where my leak was, the gasket was knackered and the casing was warped, cost me just over ?50 for a new casing and gasket

No unfortunately it doesn't i ran mine dry enough for the crankshaft to seize and the light hadn't come on at all

its odd cause its never been a problem before. Last time I looked it were fine, it were only cause i noticed oily deposit on imaculate bike that I wiped me finger over it. Checked level and none there. Mind you I did over fill it after, but i think I've probably lost a bit of it today so hey ho. Was going to sort gasket when Suzy is outta the way
However Suzy leaking oil on the other casing was another story, bloke plus big hammer = hole in side plug=big leak...woops. all fixed now though

Another cause IIRC is the paint flaking off underneath the casing/gasket and the oil seeps out underneath it

Thumbs down Re: remember to check your oil guys

The oil in your engine has two jobs to do. Keep the moving parts lubricated and keep the parts of the engine cooled that cannot be cooled by water.

There are 2 distribution methods used, pumped and splash. When your oil level starts to drop, already the oil that is left cannot do it's job properly. The oil begins to overheat and its lubrication properties breakdown, the parts that get lubricated and cooled by oil splash begin to get starved of oil. The temperature of these parts rise and friction increases.

Once the oil has been severely overheated it's sheer properties have been destroyed. This means that although oil is still being pumped around the engine it is not very effective in keeping the moving surfaces apart.

In simple terms, by the time the oil level dops to the point it can't be pumped around the engine, the damage had already started some time ago.

Never let your oil level drop my more than a small amount.

Tim.

The oil pressure light is bloody useless. "oh btw your engine's ****ed. Have a nice day"

Blew mine up (one month from brand new. Ouch) had ruined my big end bearings. Got quoted ?1000 for a repair, so bought a stolen recovered off ebay in good faith. Changed it at my mate's bike shop and its still going strong to this day.

Cost me ?350 all in.

Yeah, I blew my Sv up by doing circles on my CBR.

No for serious though, don't wheelie with low oil.
