Anyone know how old kids in year 3 are at primary school?

What sort of level of stuff do they know?? ... are we talking times table or basic algebra ... what level of science do they know, what level of English?!!?

I'm gonna have a quick google fu now, but expect to be bombarded with hits ... so asking the mighty .org ... someone must have kids in Yr 3?!!?

a child in year 3 would be 7/8 years old and learning would be some times tables (1x,2x,5x,10x)and the science would be water/growing plants/oxygen, they also learn basic computer skills (word, paint, publisher) this information comes from my 9 year old daughter.

Thanks, I get the sort of level ... it is my first day at school tomorrow and I was actually just preparing a few experiments in case I was asked to teach something ... and I didn't want to be caught off guard ...

I was actually going to demonstrate Newtons 3rd law and show how it relates to space ships. Demonstrate why some things float and some things sink ... then bring into context with a bit of history and Archimedes, and his 'eureka' moment and how that relates to big heavy metal ships floating and show some of the plasticine floating (as I have re-shaped it into a boat shape as opposed to a ball and how it is displacing its own weight/volume etc etc).

I was then going on to show how/why aeroplanes can fly and demonstrate 'lift' ...

I was then going to show how to use algebra to solve a problem that at first seems really hard ...

And showing them how to approximate how many times older than them I am ...

As long as I use plenty of props in my demo/explanation, would you see all this as beyond a 7/8 year old?!?!

TBH I was surprised what my lads learning, hes been off a couple of weeks ill, and I've been popping in to get him bits of work to do. All literacy and numeracy, but it looks like me sitting with him and teaching him stuff, when he was little is paying off

Ok, so lets knock the algebra on the head, but I really really think I can get the other concepts across by way of play/demonstration and then trying to explain what happens and why. Then using the actual names of people as trivia rather than the important part .. the eureka bath bit and him then running down the street with no clothes on should make them laugh ... I want them to realise why stuff in the world around them does stuff and then to in future question why everything does everything and not just accept it does

Newtons 3rd should be easy too ... as I can get them throwing stuff and pushing each other, they are bound to enjoy that/find that fun and memorable!?!?

If I can get one kid to think science is cool as it explains stuff around them, then my job is done!! and I could be hooked!!
