Nah, can't be bothered with this religious stuff, I don't like it regardless if your gay, straight, black, white, male, female, or Tom Cruise.

I agree with her! She has her religious beliefs and they should be respected in the same way as muslims are allowed to leave work and go pray.

NOW though if her job was simply conducting "wedding ceremonies" then she should have been redeployed on a different role

I agree and disagree. Perhaps, she should have been sent to one of those 'awareness' courses

My point exactly, and why when I read it I posted it up for discussion.

But it begs the question, of which do we attach the most weight. I think most people agree that civil partnerships were at the the time of being brought in, long overdue. Same sex partners should have the same rights, ie pension death benefits etc.........etc.........etc.........

BUT...............

In wanting respect, equal rights, and their partnerships to be recognised by the wider public at large, should members of the LGBT community not also respect the rights of those who hold religious beliefs?????

I only ask as I have a very similar situation at work, I'm very friendly with both parties, and both have asked me for some general advice.

I'm a WASP (white anglo-saxon protestant) and I find this disturbing. She was paid to do a job. If she didn't like it, leave. I find this quote from the article persuasive:

But Ben Summerskill, of gay rights campaign group Stonewall, said: 'Public servants are paid by taxpayers to deliver public services.

'They shouldn't be able to pick and choose who they deliver those services to.'

I sometimes don't like doing what clients want me to do. But as long as it's lawful and all the rest of it, I have to do it. I daresay that most people on the org have to do things that they don't really like doing. Personal belief doesn't come into it. This registrar did not have to justify the legal process to herself, all she had to do was implement it. Whether she agreed with it was irrelevant.

Disagree with her completely. She is a civil registrar, so she is not conducting religious weddings. In this case, she is refusing to conduct civil partnerships, which are purely a legal contract between two people. Her religious beliefs should not come into it.

I bet that she's perfectly happy performing civil weddings between people with non-Christian faiths, so why not this? I hope that the council can successfully appeal against the ruling. She's claiming that she is being discriminated against, but it's her that's discriminating against others.

Besides, what has homosexuality got to do with her religious beliefs anyway? Did you know that Jesus doesn't say a single word about it in the bible? So why do modern Christians make such an issue of it? Surely if it was such an important topic, Jesus might have at least mentioned something about it.

OK, rant over, but I really dislike religious bigots.

For years we had religous crusades, and all the terrorists claim they are on a holly war or religous crusade.

I think its time for a un-religous crusade, force our views on not having views on anyone and start removing religous artifacts. You just watch the amount of people become very strong in their views.
