Default calling insulin diabetics

just a quick question. I have just been put onto a couple of types of insulin (fast and slow). I was told to inject my thighs and stomach but as im pregnant feel a bit funny about injecting my stomach. so yesterday I thought Id inject into my bum (its nice and big). was ok at the time but started getting sore and today I have a large bruise. any other places I can inject the insulin? or did I just do it wrong yesterday and its normally ok in bum?

I realise this has nothing to do with bikes and moderators please feel free to delete after a couple of hours.

My sister in law is diabetic and pregnant. She injects into her thighs. I can give her a bell tonight if you like and see how shes getting on.

Kitkat hope this helps,

Injection Site Selection

The most common injection site is the abdomen (or stomach). The back of the upper arms, the upper buttocks or hips, and the outer side of the thighs are also used. These sites are the best to inject into for two reasons:
  • They have a layer of fat just below the skin to absorb the insulin, but not many nerves - which means that injecting there will be more comfortable than injecting in other parts of your body.
  • They make it easier to inject into the subcutaneous tissue, where insulin injection is recommended.

Depending on your body type, you'll find that certain injection sites work better than others.
  • Some people, for example, prefer injecting in the abdomen because the insulin absorbs well there.
  • But injecting in the abdomen isn't right for everyone, especially young children or people who are so thin and/or heavily muscled that they can't pinch up a half-inch of fat.
Consult with your doctor in choosing the injection sites that are best for you. Your doctor will consider both insulin absorption and site rotation.

they told me its ok to inject in stomach but I just feel a bit icky doing it. wont have much skin left to pinch an inch there for much longer.

As has already been said, if you are injecting into loose skin and not muscle, you'll be fine.

As a side note, I have always been told that for your fast acting insulin, the stomach is preferable as it is absorbed quicker. If you're going to inject yout thighs or upper arms, save it for your overnight, slow acting insulin as the absorbtion (sp?) rate is slower.
