Hehe, my experience of IAM riders, is them booking out a whole group on a Lydden track day and the creeping round at 30 mph in a big long line!

When I first started to take my A2 I was penalised for using some 'advanced riding techniques'. Since the test I've been riding slightly to the left of my lane and moving out to the outside when approaching a junction or whatever (basically whenever it helps me to be seen). A few bikers have told me to always maintain that position but I don;t know if tht's them slipping into bad habits or if they're right. I did actually notice when my instructor followed me he would keep that position or was thta just as it's a safer formation to have when group riding? I'd be interested to know what the IAMers say about general positioning.

Well done on passing, now consider going on to be an observer as i have, it's nice to know you're helping some one else as your observers helped you. A lot of insurers do not discount insurance premiums but the IAM have their own company called Surety who i've been told are very reasonable.

Daryl.

Congrats - I'm currently in the frustrating limbo of being 'test ready' but can't put in for it until I know the outcome of next weeks court case.......

As a rough guide this is the better position to be on the straight, dominate your lane, it's all yours, from the kerb to the white line, not just the patch of tarmac under your bike. If you stay at the one third out from the kerb you are inviting other traffic to pass you. The worse culprets are other bikers.

On left handers you need to be right of centre to get the best view around, not too far as you are in the way of corner cutters coming the other way. On Right handers over to the left, if you corner cut you will put your head into the decapitation zone. Moving accross your lane on the approach to an occupied T-junction is good technique, but anytime you sacrifice your position you must also sacrifice some speed.

Join the IAM as these rules are flexible depending on road conditions, your observations and loads of other factors, you can't learn these from a book (or a forum).

You instructor when following you will not have been in the correct place, his positioning will be the best to observe you and the road ahead, he should have explained this.

Daryl.
Yes they are. My 675 is insured through them, I think I pay £195 FC to include business use. They were by far the cheapest.
