Default My bike wont start

Hi, My 2001 sv650 k1 wont start. One day it just wouldent start and ive never got round to sorting it due to weather/ no garage/ having a car etc. It's been sitting now for near 2 months. So im now looking to get it sorted.

Now of course the batterys died i have tried jump starting it off a car, the starter motor seems to be working but it wont actually fire up. Is there a technique to starting it in this situation should i be using clutch or throttle, any tricks?

I'm completely lost as to what to do. cant exactly tow it to a garage either. Any common problems it could be? Why it just all of a sudden stopped starting. Any help or ideas appriciated.

In this weather I use full choke to fire it up (got a 2000 SV650S myself) and then gradually ease it off until it idles on its own with no choke at all. Sometimes a little throttle helps I find, but try not to flood the engine

You'll have to use the clutch to get the started motor to turn anyway.
Give the battery a good charge (may need replacing, but not sure)
Might be worth changing the spark plugs if it's been sat in crappy weather for 2 months
If changing the plugs doesn't help then I'd check if they're getting a spark. To do this I'd cable tie the clutch in (unless you have 3 hands or someone to hold it in for you ), take the plugs out and then put the HT leads (IIRC) back on them. Holding the lead with an insulated pair of pliers, touch the thread of the plug against the frame and then hit the starter button. If all is well, you should see a strong blue spark

I could be wrong about needing to change the plugs, but I'd certainly inspect them. Fresh fuel in the tank might help, although I'd thought the fuel would be fine after only 2 months.

I'm sure there'll be someone more knowledgeable than myself along shortly

HTH

Oh and welcome to the .org by the way

Fuel goes off quickly these days. I'd say you get about three weeks before it becomes noticibly poor.

Any evidence to support that?

Do you mean the kill switch?
Surely it wouldn't turn over at all then, no?

check and clean the usual suspects. (Clutch,Sidestand, killswitch).

Give the battery a good charge altho if it's been left 2 months with nothing i'd say good chance its goosed.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but:

Sidestand switch won't stop in starting in neutral...
Killswitch would stop it turning over at all...
Clutch would be the same as the killswitch

As the OP said it was turning over off the car battery, I don't believe it could be any of these.

Get the bike battery sorted anyway though

Not scientific evidence, but just find if a vehicle has sat around for that long geting fresh fuel in makes a difference.

My enduro (ktm 200 exc) wont work on fuel that has been stood for more than 2-3 weeks and my site generator wouldnt run on it either, I just put it down to good old tescos fuel. (bung it in the mrs clitroen saxo and its fine though)
