Default Debenhams Dodgyness

There is a Blue Cross sale on at Debenhams til tomorrow so I popped along on Thursday night and bought a couple of pairs of jeans . The jeans were £45 each knocked down to £9 . Nice to get a set of designer Jeans for less than the price of a Hardback book nowadays . So I get home and one pair is nice , the other pair I put on and am not too keen on them , bit on the baggy side . Now Debenhams policy is no refund on Blue Cross items but they will let you exchange for another item which is fair comment . I didn`t try these on in the shop as I had full winter Gear on the bike and couldn`t be doing with all the faffery and having to leave Gear in a changing room to go and grab a different pair if they weren`t right .

So I go and take them back today . I walk in and select another pair of jeans to take to the counter ready for the exchange . I plop the returned items on the counter and explain that I wasn`t too keen and wanna swap them for these ones and hand over my receipt . There is no problem , now usually they just scan the barcode of the old receipt , scan the exchange item and print out a new one and you are on your way . This guy starts faffing about with the numeric keypad on the till and umming as I am talking to him . He seems to be up to something and my Badger-Sense is on high alert ^..^ <----ears Perked up and nose to the wind as something smells a bit "Off" here .

I cast my eyes down at my original receipt and just as he says "There you go sir .... all done" I spot something . I was actually charged £15 for the Jeans the other day despite them having £9 on the ticket . I have taken another pair of £9 Jeans to exchange and it appears he has manually adjusted the price to suit . I eyeball him for a couple of seconds and he gives me a nervous look . I stare at him for a second longer and keeping my eyes on him I flick my Credit Card towards him and say "I think you know what you have to do here" ................... he gives me an odd look and I say "Look , that receipt there seems to say £15 for those Jeans , so I was over charged for them"

He does the fake "Oh yeah so it is" , and I carry on "And between the scanning of receipts and tickets , my new Jeans seem to have gained £6 in price so that the transaction was seamless , I think it best you scrap that new receipt , scan those back in , exchange the new Jeans and give me a £6 refund there lad" .

He stutters and tries to make some excuses and thats the point where I have lost interest in excuses and just want this to go better than it is . I eyeball him again until he shuts up and I inhale slowly and exhale and explain slowly "Less talky , more refundy as I am NOT interested in the excuses of somebody who is conning me out of £6 and has quite blatantly done so ..... that little tappety number on the numeric keypad there seemed to be the changing of a 9 to a 15"

He gulps and nods and gets a woman over to put a supervisor key in the till , she is asking questions about why this is being done and he stammers his way through some half-assed explanation but she has already got his number by the look on her face ....... that "Oh no you didn`t" look . I wonder what there policy is on all of this and are they trained to do this or is it something he has picked up from another worker there ? All I know is that from now on I will be checking ALL my receipts before leaving the premises of any shop from now on .

You're a good story teller. If that was me I would have just said "Debenhams tried to overcharge me today! But I got my money in the end."

I seem to have a photographic memory for the finer details and I do like to convey the meaning and sentiment in my little memoires
