Default Argh! Adjusting throttle cables at carb end

Hi all

Almost done my first carb strip and rejet, they're now back in the bike awaiting the airbox to go on top.

Problem is when I undid the throttle cables to get them off the carb rail I ended up moving the adjusters and locknuts on the one side and the captive nut on the other side - with hindsight I shouldn't have moved the captive nuts at all...

So now putting them back in everything's in a completely different place and I'll need to do a completely new adjustment to get them sorted properly At the moment the throttle turns the cam but it doesn't snap back closed, it returns slowly back to the stop.

Is there a certain distance the captive nut needs to be threaded on by? Or would it be a case of pulling the throttle cables tight as poss from the cam, then threading the captive nut into position and sorting the adjustment from there?

Cheers loads everyone

That isn't an adjustment problem, wind the adjusters all the way in to their shortest length. You can do a final adjustment when you're finished jetting them.

Your problem is you have the solid part at bottom of cable pointing wrong way, have a pi$$ about until the throttle moves nice and freely.

Nice one, cheers YC

Moving the adjusters in, is that moving them towards the locknuts? And turn the cable ends around in the cam?

The locknuts are on the cables, I got these terms from the haynes manual heh heh!

The cables route through a mounting bracket on the carb before going to the throttle cam, the cable has two nuts either side of this bracket - the rearward one is the captive nut and the front one is the locknut.

Just to check - the front cable on the throttle switchgear - the opening cable - this is the one that goes around the top of the throttle cam, routing around to the rear of it?

Thanks again everyone

I'm really sorry all but I'm having a nightmare getting my head around these cables.

After swearing at them and at the Haynes manual all night my brother had a go and this is what we got to;

http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/s...v/Image070.jpg

The cables at the switchgear end are at maximum slack, i.e adjusted all the way in.

The throttle seems to be ok, I need to muck about with the switchgear cable to sort the slack.

- The closing cable (lower cable) has the adjuster pretty much all the way at the top (where the rubber cable outer starts). Does that mean there's no adjustment left in the cable?

- There's a lot of thread left at the left side of the bracket, more than when I took it off I'm sure. Do the cables need to be more towards the left of the thread to allow more adjustment?

- When Haynes says to move the adjusters in, is that moving them towards the front or the back side of the bike?

- haynes says that to adjust you need to slacken the locknut and then move the adjuster out to tighten the cable. Trying this the locknut moves with the adjuster instead of independently, is that right?

- the lower cable's captive nut (leftmost nut on the cables) isn't butting up against the bracket, does it have to be against the bracket to be secure?

- Does anyone know of a guide on how to install and adjust these cables?

I'm really sorry about this, the rest of the carb install/removal/rejetting/e-clips etc is no problem at all but I just cannot get my head around these throttle cables

Thanks again for your help everyone
