Had practically no time for the bike this week. I got some carb cleaner and it said to spray it into the open carb air intakes and run the engine for a bit, that definitely helped the backfiring is less frequent and it will actually idle without the choke once warm, (idle still seems like it needs adjusting but has rusted solid) but have not yet had time to take the carbs of to properly clean.

I think its one or more of the following:
carbs need proper clean
fuel needs replacing (been sat there for best part of a year)
carbs need proper setup (rejet or balancing) since having restrictors put on and new can on.
replacement spark plugs. (same ones on it since i bought it and i am pretty sure they have been there for a good few years.

Take a look at this video and listen to the new sound of the backfiring. also if anyone can see or hear and has experience with them is the slow throttle response because of the restrictors or a lack of good airflow

Any ideas guys? Im limited for time to spend on it so your feedback is invaluable. I'm going to change out the fuel today if i get a chance.

Change the fuel and clean the carbs properly, change the plugs while you're at it although if both cylinders are firing they aren't U/S, It often sweetens things up. Also look at the ends of the plugs for clues as to how the engine's running (normal, the firing end should be light brown, grey or tan coloured with a few combustion deposits - Haynes). Anything else indicates a problem. There should be a proprietary solvent/cleaner for carburettors, only thing that springs to my mind is Holts Fuel system cleaner. Someone will, no doubt, enlighten us !

I changed the fuel today. Much nicer running now the backfiring seems to have changed to a just bassy fire rather than a pop. e.g. bob bob bob bob bob BOB bob bob bob bob BOB (if you read that out loud it is a quite good description!)

Only problem now is a low idle. and a idle adjuster so rusted it is seized! (is it replaceable? i may as well whilst i am it)

Going to take the carbs out and spray some more cleaner through them and put the non restricting sliders in and see if the idle changes because then i know it is more likely a setup issue rather than a problem with something issue.

Thinking it could simply just need a good rag but with no MOT and no front lights or gauges at current it doesn't seem plauseable.

cheers again guys

Been there done that and i was so embarassed, i managed to go down with it and grab the bike in a panic. Just so happened i grabbed the left bar and pulled the clutch in. and just pulled the bike straight back up! was impressed because i didnt actually stall it when i fell off in gear
