Have any pointy owners actually seen a fault code from a wet front plug?

+1 to wet front plug, my curvy was a b**ch about that but I made a wee splash guard from plastic and an aluminium 90degree bracket i knocked up, 15min job and my gap between radiator and front cylinder head is protected from weather

Interesting suggestion, have you seen this before? When the problem developed I hadn't had the bike out in the wet for a few days and it rode fine for 40 miles before it started to go wrong...
Try feeling the headers. No ignition, no hot exhaust. Worked when my old eliminator went onto 3 cylinders. Looked at the pipes, #3 was wet, others were dry (was p%$%ing down). Massive panic, solved with new Spark plugs!

Good luck!

Good morning all.

Check all connections carefully, & make sure the plug cap is securely screwed onto the HT lead. It may be worth removing the HT caps, & swopping them around to see if the problem shifts to the rear cylinder. Also, snip a few mm of HT lead off, so the cap screws into clean wire.
When it's next on one cylinder, make sure you have battery voltage at one of the low tension terminals at the coil in question, (orange/white wire methinks). It's either losing voltage, or the pulse from the ignition unit.

Cheers.

Ha, I'd be looking forward to the warmer weather down under

Your fault will have cured itself by then

maviczap/all: I got some time to ride the bike before I left, only a short ride admittedly, but it got upto temp and ran like a dream. It had been stood in the garage for 4-5 days - I take it this further suggests a problem with water getting in?

Just want to get back and get this sorted!

Sounds very much like a moisture problem as its cured itself by being in the garage for a few days

Finally got some time to go riding after getting back and as predicted the bike was fine as soon as I got it out of the garage - started perfectly and ran well. Rode it around for a few days then it came into contact with standing water on the road and I was back to 1 cylinder.

Long story short these are the cliffs:

- bike drops to 1 cylinder but no fault code
- make it to a friends house to borrow some tools and strip it back
- HT lead is covered in some spray silicone stuff, clearly a bodge by a previous owner
- cap on the HT lead has a split
- rubber splash guard bent away from the block so channels water in instead of guiding it away
- turn around splash guard to provide protection
- cut HT lead back and rescrew cap
- clean bore
- clean all contact areas
- fill cap with vasaline and fit the to plug correctly

After all the work the bike was still only on 1 cylinder but was now showing a fault code - the coil pack. Fiddled with the connector on the back of the coil pack and she roared and has been running well since (even in the rain and with standing water).

So I had 2 problems and HT breakdown/water problems will NOT generate a fault code for anyone who is interested - that was down to a crap spade connector (still to be sorted).

So final question - guess I can't just get a new cap that goes over the end of the HT lead can I? I assume I have to replace the whole unit? Tempted to just fill the cap with something more permanent than vasaline.

Thanks,

Jynx
