Can't think of any use for it right now so not looking to spend too much and importantly want to keep the costs down eg tax, so if it's pre 1/3/01 reg car it needs to be less than 1549cc, after March 01, up to a band F (150g/km).
Needs to have at least 4 seats
Would like something interesting such as Puma 1.4, erm can't think of anything else

thinking around the £1,000 mark
I should take more time to read posts!

Mate got a Firebird for £600 though.

Probably a bag of bolts but a wicked drive if you find one of the few good ones left

Not going to get a lot for a grand, id go for a golf. You should be able to get a Mk3 for that sort of money.
Can you get any golfs with low tax?

Doubt it, they'll be to old to qualify for the low tax band. Or if it is it wont be very sporty to drive. Stay away from 1.4 Golfs, its a heavy car and it wont have any performance.

You might find a MKII or MKIII GTI for a grand, personally I'd be looking for a an older 3 series BMW...

It says in the advert "Cooling fan does not work"

Which probably means its overheated and popped its head gasket. If it is a 1.4 Turbo they have an awful reputation for getting to hot and like Viney says personally I wouldnt touch it with a bargepole.

Just read OP properly so ignore my suggestion. Engine too big and not enough seats!

How big do the back seats need to be? A puma doesn't have much in the way of back seats

Nissan ZX300 or SX200
Alfa Romeo GTV

Not very exciting, but then neither's a Puma...

Ford Cougar
Megane Coupe (I had one, leather, electric everything, twas a great car)
406 Coupe
Fiat Coupe
Hyundai Coupe (as per the Megane)
BMW 3 Series Coupe
Mazda MX3 or MX6
Honda Prelude
Toyota Celica
MB CE Class (and pretend your name's Patrick Swayze and your a martial arts expert! )

You'd need to bust you road tax budget for most of these though. Megane, Hyundai both came in a 1.6, some of the other did too, but without going for a bl00dy Tigra, I don't know what else you'll get in a 1.4

Honda did the Civic Coupe in a 1.5 engine called the LSi.
