Yes and no. See my post above. If you disconnect the bell wire at the master socket and run good quality cable (not the cheap stuff from DIY superstores) to the extension, then you shouldn't get a drop in speed at the extension socket.

Slight derail. Perhaps this is why my Sky+ box's modem won't talk to sky through a cheapo diy cable

Thanks for all the replies guys. It has actually been absolutely fine since I hard wired the laptop to the router (which is fine because I use a docking station). Maybe moving the router has caused it to fight with a neighbours.
I'll put it back onto Wifi and set up a ping tool to log a continuous ping to the router, to my public IP gateway, and to a couple of websites. If they all drop out at once it's my wifi, if the public addresses all drop out at once it's my ADSL connection, and if only the website addresses drop, it's Orange. If Orange I'll do some tracert's and give them a phone. Last edited by -Ralph-; 07-05-10 at 04:31 PM. |

Have you tried plugging a normal phone into the extension socket and seeing if that works? |

Sky box can talk to sky when everything is disconected from the main socket

That sounds a bit beyond my knowledge of phone lines. Do you have adsl and, if so, are you using microfilters to isolate normal phones from the adsl signal?

All it means is my sky box can't order sky movies, so its skys loss, not mine. The answer is to have a proper line installed incl the extentions

Yeah, always best to have it in the master socket now adays, especially as the new BT sockets come with the new I-Plate which is suppose to increase speed as it filters out alot more, Also have the bare minimum extensions, if you've got an old one unused, whip the master socket off and disconnect the old socket! Less likely to generate a fault on your line
