Nearly down and nearly out.
I've been having a good weekend, out on the job bike for the last three days, eight or so hours a day on patrol on the BMW R1200RT. It's a big, heavy beastie, about 260kg wet weight plus a bit for the radio, lights and other kit we carry. ![]() So today I was mooching around, looking for trouble when it found me in the most innocuous way. I pulled up at a junction, left foot down on the shell-grip. I usually balance the bike really well, but this time, my foot slipped on some sh1tty bit of gravel and bang! The bike started to topple, my foot then stuck to the floor (How with gravel there but who knows?) so I couldn't re-position it and I had visions of a snapped leg (again) and an awefull lot of writing to cover the damage to the bike. (shame but true) At the last moment, my left foot came free and instead of letting the bike go onto it's crash bars, stupid ol' me decided to hold it up. Now imagine 260kg at 45 degrees from verticle and how hard that is to recover. I managed it in that instant of instinct but boy oh boy, am I regreting it now. I'm in agony all across my back, my neck doesn't work any more and each time I move in the wrong way, I can't breath! I've ripped the muscles to some tune. No looking for any sympathy, I wouldn't expect it ![]() So, my advice, drop the feckin' bike! Pete ![]() |

Brand new made to measure leathers, do the emergency stop, leathers too stiff to get leg out far enough. Took me 5 minutes to lower that bike to the floor. Wish I had just dropped it - would still have failed. Happened to get the same Examiner on my next test who, after passing me, was free to comment on how it had been bad luck, but mandatory to fail me for that... Anyways, hope you're feeling better soon *passed the virtual Fruitbasket - minus any apples of course :P*

gws mate.
I remember on a rideout a few years ago someone half dropped their sv at a junction and was holding it at 45degs. Some of the others jumped off their bikes and got him vertical again, Moral, you did well getting it back up. |

Ouch well done for saving the bike but ouch mate. If you had dropped it would'nt there have been pointing and laughing back at the bike section.

BTW if it makes you feel any better, a guy I work with told me that the Met had to rescue a vehicle off of its side at the junction at the Imperial War Museum.
Yep someone managed to roll a Cop Van, took 2 hours plus to sort it out :P
