The bible wasn't written by god. So you are not questioning god by questioning the bible.

I'll question god if I want to though. We've already established that I don't believe in the christian portrayal of god.

Have you ever noticed how old people seem to find the church? its as if they become more scared of dieing as they get closer to it, my mum is now a regular church go'er at the age of 68 but up until a year ago she wasn't interested? she takes my daughter with her now every Sunday and i do think its done my daughter good, she knows the difference between right and wrong, knows swearing is bad, respects her peers and is generally a very good kid indeed.

That's probably more to do with the fact she's too scared of the cooing biddies to move a muscle lol. I remember going to church every now and then when I was young, couldn't tell you if it has done me good or not, however I don't see how it can do harm. If anything, getting a child to sit in a great hall surrounded by strangely decorated windows and full of strangers would be daunting enough, if they can get through that without misbehaving you've probably cracked it lol.

The 10 commandments is probably the best bit in the Bible.

My (honest and non-confrontational ) question to you then, if you discard parts of the bible, do not believe in the christian god, is why are you christian at all? I know enough about it and I think we'd both agree that without an already morally sound person to teach it the bible is a dangerous text. A newcomer to our world (who can read and understand our language) would be very confused, and often appalled.

Is it necessary to engulf a lesson in morals in the quagmire that is christianity and the other parts of the bible, if after all is said and done you do not actually believe in their god?

(You can just say yes ). I'm not judging anybody, and I don't really want to appear to be challenging your religious beliefs even though that's just what I'm doing
If you have faith and feel happy about it you won't mind I trust.

Religion has no place in the modern world at all. Tax them. Remove their political influence. And for the love of god (ironic- eh? ) do NOT let someone religious in charge of a country.

I guess you're thinking GW in particular and the USA in general... but please remember that they have a very different culture, the Pilgrim Fathers left England to escape religious persecution. As indeed did many more who followed them.

I'm a member of the Church of England.

TBH I find this thread faintly ridiculous but very irritating. I don't have to justify my beliefs to anyone, and I'm not going to. Someone further up commented on the lack of religious bigots on here. We have more than enough atheist bigots to make up for that. Look at how Vixis has been treated on here - comprehensively rubbished. If you don't believe, fine - I respect your views, you don't have to justify them to me. But the way some on here have gone about it suggests to me that the people concerned are actually perhaps not that certain after all.

You don't need to justify them to anyone Ed. But you must acknowledge how ridiculous it all looks. If you were born in Iraq; would you be a member of the church of England?
