Yeah exactly.

Tell you what could be interesting for curvy, CBR600R 05 shock, has #600 spring but is only 310mm eye to eye. Longer clevis to extend it out to 350mm or so and it could be an interesting swap.

Since my bikes not being used for commuting any more I'm going to be giving it some TLC, so I'm in the market for a rear shock. With me being on the very heavy side at 17 stone without gear plus numerous runs luggaged up you can guess that my shocks done for.

So would I be right in saying that I should be looking for a K3/K4 GSXR 1000 shock? Does the original battery fit if it's lifted up with some of the underside of the seat cut on a K7 pointy? Or is it easier to go with a slimmer battery?

Scott, no offence intended here, but at that weight and with the number of runs with luggage (and potentially pillion?) you would probably better getting a new shock sprung for your weight. A lot more money I know, but worth it in the long run IMO. A Hagon sprung for you will be a much better shock than the standard item, but cheaper than Ohlins / Maxton etc. Upside is you keep your standard shock and swap it back if you sell the bike, sell the new shock on for a good sum. Worth considering?

Penske and some other aftermarket ones can be modified to fit most bikes as they're a modular setup. I wouldn't bother with hagon as they're an emulsion shock and you know how well stock one works lol. Though since you can get proper spring rate it would be an improvement.

The spring rates are very different and IIRC slightly different lengths. But as barwell says will still be rubbish due to the very basic damping in both units.

Yes, no gain in putting a heavier spring on if you don't have the rebound damping to control it.

I've had a look at the Hagon gear and it looks like it's going to be between £250 to £300 for a shock. That's a bit more then what I'd like to spend but I'll keep it in mind. A cheap £80 K3 GSXR shock from ebay might not fill all the requirements, but surly it will be a vast improvement over what I currently have?

As for the Penske gear, HOW MUCH!!!. £420 for the basic shock!

Tell me about it. But hagon is just a stock shock but rebuildable.

Want to buy penske 8981 for same price as hagon?

It depends which Hagon because their custom built shocks are over £300. I've never known a spring and some metal to cost so much before.
