Being so much more expensive, it presumably it has a lower turnover?? So your fuel might have sat in the petrol stations tank for x months??? The higher the octane the quicker the fuel degenerates (IIRC) … so, presuming it has sat about for a bit going off/stale I am not sure if you are better or worse off …

I say this as my old racebike HAS to run super unleaded (raised compression, advanced timing) I used to run it on Shell Optimax, the stuff never smelt as ‘sharp’ as normal unleaded. Anyway, I ended up with engine problems at one point … it burnt out all 8 of the exhaust (or was it inlet) valves … it was put down to carp fuel … now I used to buy a fresh batch every time I used it, so it can only have been dodgy batch from the pump!!!

I now don’t know what to do!!! … I actually now get the stuff from motorway services, it is another 5-10p more again, but in the hope the turnover is higher … (I also get BP ultimate now ).

This redex stuff sounds good to me and if there is anything that I can do to keep the engine even happier then I am happy to do it. I might give it a try and see what gives.

Its a waste of money* and bad for the environment!!! ... if you have ever taken a modern engine apart, they are pretty clean!! The additives/detergents in modern fuels are obviously pretty good

*I say waste as it just isn’t necessary, not that it is a bad product …

Blimey I'm scared to tighten the chain up myself in case I f**k it up, taking the engine apart is something I am naever likely to do.

Bad for the environment - why?

Redex can be useful for staving off having to clean out carbs, I've used it that way, it did make a big difference... And premium fuel is prett much a waste for a standard SV IMO but it does seem to be more resistant to carb icing, so that's handy for the curvies.

Right from what I understand from what my dad told me, he is in the oil industry....

The higher octane fuel burns more efficenly, so its should/does add a few mpg to the bike/car. Also in his car he won't put regular unleaded in as it knocks, and by putting in super he get a better mgp and the car performs better. I have read in a few bike mags, that it may increase your bhp, by 1-2
but to be honest are you going to notice that on the road?

i run Sv off regular and its performs fine, I normally stick shell in as its at the bottom of the road and cheapest in the area. I find BP expensive.

Its probally better to stick in branded fuel if you can or every once in a while as it has additives in it, thats what you pay extra for. I stick just what ever is cheapest in the car, its old and just goes. I'm sure someone will know a lot more than I do about it, but if I remeber next time I see my dad I'll get him to explain it all to me!

a episode of top gear once said unless you have a high performance car you wont really benefit from super unleaded fuels, you wouldn't feel the difference in a fiesta but would feel a noticeable difference in a impreza turbo.
