Is it better to go with the mod on the rear sprocket rather than the front, ie 2 up on the rear? I use mine as an allrounder so dont know whether this would be a good idea for me.

I use mine as an all rounder too. I didn't want too aggressive acelleration, so chose to go 2 up at the back.

I find that motorway speeds, you use 500rpm or so more to hold 70mph. 9k RPM in 6th is about 110mph, whereas it used to be 120mph ish before the change.

It's also not snatchy on the throttle, but when you open it aggressively, you certainly feel the suspension extend at the front (I'm talking here about rolling on in pretty much any gear, from low in the rev range, not standing starts).

Standing starts, it's still pretty difficult to wheelie by accident, but if you intend to do it, it's pretty easy (5k RPM ish in 1st, dump the clutch & up she comes - not that I advocate that at all you understand).

HTH.

I put a 14 on the front but wasn't happy. I reckon it gives the chain a harder time. So I've gone for 1 up on the rear(45). Defo snappier than standard.

Come C&S time I will be gearing it down. Takes days to get to anywhere near top whack anyway. More acceleration will be good as I'm mostly city commuting.

Fuel consumption goes up and you may get more wear on the chain and a little less adjustment are the only negatives for getting a bigger rear sprocket. Have never bothered doing a front as its too much hassle.

Another bonus is your speed and odometer will still read correct. Unlike nearly every other jap bike now that runs off the gearbox instead of our front wheel driven speedo. Sweet.

maybe i'm just being thick but how does changing the spocket size do anything that you couldn't do with the gear shifter?
If u want more acceleration why not just use a lower gear and that way the top end is still there should u ever want it.
That would work unless you find that there isn't enough acceleration for you in first gear. Personally I find that if i really open her up in first i can't keep the frount wheel on the floor, i can't see why i would want to make that worse.

On the road, side by side, same bike, lower-geared bike waves goodbye to std. any gear, anywhere on the rev range. Std. bike maybe 5-10mph top speed advantage.

For ?20or so and 15-30mins to change a rear sprocket, it makes a surprising difference even just a coupla teeth. Extra zap but more gear changing.

My GSX14 is geared for 180mph+, the only way it would reach that speed would be off a long cliff! The bike (excess of torque) and the way I ride it though ,suits the tall gearing.

Some manufactures (ktm/aprilia, smaller fronts) give you a different sprocket or have a part available because of (i guess) emissions demands. Changes the bikes character.

Depends how you ride ,what you ride. Looking fwd to see how the SV does.

Each to there own.

The SV won't rev out in top anyway, so do you really lose any?

Got my SV with a 45t rear sprocket on. Seems to suit it well, and it'll still cruise at 110 mph with luggage (autobahns only )

Yup, but that's not really a realistic comparison since there's no reason for both bikes to be in the same gear. Say you're doing 4th gear roll-ons, yes the lower geared bike will pick up faster but in the real world the higher geared bike wouldn't have to sit in 4th. Equally, you might be high in the revs which gives the high-geared bike the advantage. It's not a very useful comparison I think.

I'm back to standard gearing, the only time it really makes a difference on the road is in first IMO, since the bike has a gear lever and a clutch. But then maybe I'd not feel the same with a standard bike.
