Throttle position sensor, tells that evil EFI when to inject more fuel when you open the throttle.

Best bet is to find a friend who does bits of maintenence on the pointies, my experience is far greater on the curvy.
This stuff is easy and not worth paying garage rates for. Hence why you get muppets like me who'll do these jobs for a tenner ![]()

Hi mikeyd,
You PM'd me on the issue (not sure why me specifically, but hey, who cares). OK, my thoughts, you have an '04 bike that has 1900 miles on the clock, and isn't running right. How long has the bike been sat still since it last ran right? How long ago was the oil changed? Also, I assume the fuel is relatively new? Or has it been sat in the tank a while? The idle speed adjuster on a pointy is on the left side of the frame (as you sit on the bike), just in front of the black trangluar plastic, and just behind (and above the radiator). IIRC, turn the screw right to increase revs. Do this in small steps, and rev the bike a little after each step. Eventually the bike should idle just below 1500 RPM. Throttle bodies would be my next step, but you'd need a vacuum gauge (I won't explain it in case you don't have the tool - but let me know otherwise & I'll happily walk you through it, really easy work). After that, I'd be looking at the TPS. For that, you'll need a T25 security torx bit and a little wire. Have a search on the forum for "TPS adjustment" and there's loads of info on it. It could be something more sinister, but those are the easy things to look at first. Also, where do you live? Someone in your area may be available for you to borrow tools etc. |

Make sure your fans are working and it's not overheating. Mine got a bit hot when the fan switch failed (£40 to replace!?) Got a bit hot, spluttered and died.

Hi I'm pinging this thread to see if mikeyd or anyone else has found a solution to this.
I have a 2005 SV650 SK5 with a similar problem. Initially it only happened occasionally in very wet weather. I commute 60 miles per day every day and the bike has been back to the shop on 3 separate occasions for a total of two weeks off the road, without them finding anything, short of suggesting a new FI unit at £600. Symptoms: One cylinder drops out on tickover when warm or after shutting off the throttle when slowing down behind traffic, and also after ticking over at the lights. I'm reduced to blipping the throttle before pulling away or it drops out on one cylinder under load. When I got the bike I could snap the throttle open and get an immediate response, but now I have to open it more slowly or blip it first while feathering the clutch to be sure of a good response. I first thought it was the damp as it only happened after motorway miles in really wet weather, but it has got worse since riding the bike through the winter and dropping it (at walking pace) in the snow a couple of times and now occurs every day, even in the recent good weather. A mate who's a mechanic on a race team suggested TPS or topple-over switch, but I've read elsewhere that the SV doesn't have a TPS and I can't find a topple switch in the locations shown for older models. I now have the problem every day - definite over-fuelling at tickover and low revs, though it still runs perfectly at high speed and pulls well once the excess fuel has cleared out of the system. Any info would be greatly appreciated at this point. I'll post to a new thread if no response here, but thought I'd check here first. |
