Only a court can prosecute for a £1000 fine.
The police can only issue a £30 fine, if you are a repeat offender then you will get a notice of intended prosecution. Then you get a £1000 fine and your plate removed so you have to register your vehicle on a Q plate.

BTW if you think your plate might have been stolen I'd suggest reporting it to the Police - I know two people who had number plates nicked and later got flooded with tickets/fines from someone using their plates on another vehicle!
May well be OK, but this precaution will help prove your case further down the line if it has been taken for this purpose. |
