Hmm don't know about depreciation but:
Insurance: £400 last year Tax: £190 Petrol: 1600 miles last year @ approx £50/tank/300 miles, so approx £266.50 MOT: £55 (?) Repairs last year have cost me approx £100 So last year it's £1011.50 - £84.29/month or £19.45/week....damn. I barely use it, thought it would be better... |

If my new motah experiences 100% depreciation over the time of ownership I'll have lost 200 quid. My Micra is currently depreciating at the rate of -200% per annum. I bought it for 200 quid in January (actually only paid for the MOT and tax and got the car for free), I am selling it next week for 450.
However, all is not rosy in Lozzo's garden - I've just bought a 2.7 litre turbo diesel 4x4, so expect my fuel costs to rise a little. Running costs of vehicles very rarely bothers me - If I'm enjoying the ownership and ride/drive then I don't even think about insurance costs and fuel consumption. When I managed to empty the fuel tank completely on my old Firestorm in 63 miles I thought it was funny, because I'd obviously been caning the living crap out of it and having a good time. I once managed to get the Gixer thou to almost empty in less than 80 miles on the road. |

Well I don't have car.....
Though when I did my insurance was about £260/year TPFT my car wasn't worth jack so not worth comp, the insurance included full break down. Tax was err about £115 for the year, MOT was whatever it cost. It had a 55 litre tank and did about 300 ish miles with about 10 litres left in the tank, that was okay when petrol was cheaper. Repairs and ruuning ie tyres were always cheap. Probally no more than £300/year, it was serviced at home. I did 60 000 miles in that car, never broke down on me once, it was awesome but at 14 years old, things started going wrong. I would have another escort or was that mine was just a dam good good car? When it evetually got wrote off, it was parked and someone crashed into it. I got more money from the insurance payout, than I paid for it 4 years ago. I may get another car in the next 12 months simply to keep the my NCB going for cars as I now have 7 years, so a cheap heap would fine. I don't see the point of an expensive car, as I just don't need to drive that much. |

I've had all the new cars I would ever want,Audi,BMW,VW and Mercedes and the killer has always been depreciation. Nowadays I buy a 10 year old with low mileage, run it for what would be normal mileage for a car of its year,i.e Currently 1993 Honda with less than 80k which should be over 120k so as it is an up and coming cheap classic hopefully in a couple of years I will recoup my initial purchase outlay.
There are loads of older cars out there with full service, well maintained histories which means that bargains are to be had if you look and don't require the image of driving a new car |

I think I would kill myself if I found out how much my car costs me. Been trying to get rid of it but current climate means I can't sell it for a reasonable price.

I did the maths once and factoring everything in it was over 3x cheaper than public transport (as well as actually doable without arriving at work at 11.00am and going home at 3.00pm). The bike was marginally more expensive than the car concerned (Pug 106 1 litre).
