well, for starters there is the freedom of information act...

there are hungry greedy insurance company's....

so in about 20 years or maybe even sooner, the government will have sold all the data to the insurance company's..

so when you go to an insurance company and ask for life insurance you will be catogarised, then some people will be told 'sory but your family has a history of X genetic problem so we are not going to insure you'.

My DNA is on the database and I don't care. I have nothing to hide and when I am out of the job I will never have anything to hide so they can keep it as long as they wish.

DNA can also prove you innocent as well as guilty, I say what's it matter !

It's only the guilty that have something to worry about in my opinion. And DNA is used for the purpose it is taken and not given to insurance companies to see if you have HIV.

All depends how much you trust the government and any bodies/individuals or companies that might get hold of the information. And any future governments/bodies etc.
Personally I dont have that faith in our ruling classes.
And I wouldnt sign a blank cheque to our future rulers either, whoever they might be.

Right, another slant on the subject...

Lets imagine another Hitler comes to power somewhere in the world, doesn't have to be Germany, but someone with the same intentions. Could even just be a terrorist group with enough backing.

They are aware of the UK's DNA database, and pull off whatever job is required to obtain that data. Computer security isn't fantastic at the best of times, and I doubt physical security will be brilliant as this will be classed as a "low risk" database.

So now the oppressive leader/group has your DNA (if you're in the database). They set about making bio-chemical weapons, specific to certain DNA patterns.

Are you still happy your data is in the database?

I don't.

Slowly creeping toward a 1984 esque state... who's proposing all these little changes? Is there some force at work or are they all just a bit retarded in the same way?

I also don't think ID cards will stop terrorism.

Baph----A bit far fetched but not a million miles from potential reality.Suppose a new "Hitler" came to power here and wanted to identify certain ethnic groups to eradicate.
Then try telling me "Ive nothing to hide so Im alright"

True, but it's just another use of the data. Lots of people in this thread assume it's only ever going to be used to catch criminals.
