Don't completely go on engine sizes or insurance groups. When I was getting my first car the likes of a clio, fiesta, micra, 106, saxo etc (teen cars as I like to call them) all one litre engine size or thereabouts and all low insurance group, but they were all mega more expensive than my eventual car - 1.6 rover 200 ('99 model - which performance wise was quite impressive for a first car at 17! But...then the headgasket went and had to do an engine swap!)

I'm guessing your over 21 so I wouldn't at all be surprised if you can get yourself insured on a two litre for next to nothing. Try something like a Honda Accord 1.8, only insurance group 8ish and it's a Honda so bound to be reliable!

Also, I'd give Liverpool Victoria insurance a try! They undercut everyone else by a grand when I did mine and I got doube no claims for the first year of the policy and it was transferable to another insurance company. Don't know if they still do this deal though but you could always ask!

Apologies if the above contains major grammatical and spelling errors...I've been on the sauce this evening but I did my best!

an accord possibility i've been looking at 323 mazda's and nissan almera's so far they seem to be cheap to insure but you can get a fairly good sized car for your money.

modern cars are a lower insurance group aswell

i had a 1995 1.5D 106, only had it 6 months so didn't get any no claims, sold it bought a 2000 1.4 astra, faster, bigger, a million times more flashy............. 300 quid cheaper on insurance

I'm thinking about doing my car test eventually too, something that I should really do. I'm happy on the bike but it's so bloody cold all the time!
