No need to sell your bike. I don't see why you have to tell your ins. co. OTHER THAN at renewall. It's not as if you'll be claiming.
With a ban to declare you'll probably need all the NCB you can get
Sorry to hear - hope the year (or shorter) is not too hard for you.

Oh, & going abroad to sit a driving test so that you had another licence to use for a year would be a terribly bad thing to do

That's confusing, right now there is no cross-country agreement to dish out points and/or driving licence punishment to licences from other countries. So they can't 'add' your French ban to the UK ban.

The only thing I can think of is that they might be using it as 'prior evidence of character' (or words to that effect) to jack you up to a 12 month ban purely for the UK offence. Out of interest how fast were you caught here, because to get a 12 month ban you'd have to be going very, very fast. I am not actually sure if there are limits (I think there are recommendations but I'm not sure if those can be broken by the court when sentencing - perhaps so), in terms of how long you can be banned for a given offence.

The only things I can think of that might get you that are dangerous driving (12 month minimum, mandatory ban), or perhaps a 2nd totting-up offence within 3 years (12 month ban also).

Theres a clause in my policy and every policy I ever had that says you must have a license and not be disqualified for the vehicle type concerned.I think your insurance becomes invalid when you lose your license and with modern big brother databases I bet your insurance company will know that.

Agree with Biggles I think your insurance would be invalid even in its thrid party component. Cash it in and Sorn the bike.

I was banned in 2003 (6 months) on top up points. Its not clear if you have already been banned or "just" expect to be. If it is 12 months lodge an appeal (against the sentance not the verdict) and ask the magistrates to allow you to drive pending appeal.

If they do.

When the court gives you date of the appeal ask for a deferrence. Given you get one you then withdraw your appeal before the hearing sending your licence (if you still have it) to the clerk of the court(recorded delivery to get there about a week before the date)

Just before they send your licence back you will recieve a form to fill in. Do not tell any lies on this form. However leave blank any questions you do not understand.

You may find you get the licence back sooner than you thought.

If they dont. with draw the appeal the following week.

French thing shows you to be of "poor character" after all you do not hold a French licence for them to withdraw. This will not have helped the magistrates take into account any mitigating circumstances you will have offerred.

The ban will stay on your licence for 4 years and insurance companies will expect you to declare it for the next 5. Start saving!

My understanding of it......

I don't think your mate will be covered to ride it when you're banned anyway. Under 3rd party cover for other riders you're supposed to be the main rider, which you can't be if you're banned.

You don't want to land him in the sh!t too.

No! You were ( will be ) banned for getting caught.
Best of luck with the case.

Cancel your road traffic insurance and pay a small premium and get it added to your house insurance for the period of sorn. This can be done as I do it,just a matter of where you store it,in my case in a brick garage adjacent to the house
