Hiya mate & welcome along

I just part ex'd my 2005 sv650 s for £2500 (and would have sold for that price as well). Have a look on www.biketrader.co.UK for sv's within your budget and reasonable distance. Bike prices have been absolutely flat on their ars*s for the last 6-8 months, but with the better weather we've had they're slowly creeping back up.

There's a massive hein gericke store in Leeds which sells alsorts of leathers, textiles, gloves, boots, lids, modifications for your bike. The staff can't bend over backwards far enough in terms of advice and trying kit on and getting the stuff which is right for you

Have you read up on the difference between curvys/pointys/nakeds? All sounds a bit blue lol...

Btw, don't buy leathers and helmets from Ebay. The whole idea is you try them on in a store and see if they're comfortable.
I'll check Direct choice out, cheers. Yes I think I'll find a local bike kit supplier and try some stuff on before I part with my cash. Definately better to be sure I get something that fits / looks OK.

Just googled Hein Gericke and found that it's on Regent Street. I will definately have a drive through and have a look at what they've got on offer. It looks like I'll be paying at least £400 for all my kit including helmet and boots.

I think I'll pay up to £1600 for the bike, £400-450 on protective gear and the rest on insurance.

And nope, I've no idea about the difference of the curvy and pointy. I'm guessing it's something to do with the shape of the fairings?

Cheers for all the advice by the way guys, it's appreciated.

+1 on the not buying a helmet off ebay but I don't see a problem with leathers/boots/gloves if you know your measurements and check out the history of the seller. My Belstaffs cost me £25 including postage and I've been using them for over a year, love them. Tis just a matter of decent bargains coming up at the right time. If nothing catches your eye in the run up to getting your bike then obviously you'll want some quickly in which case ebay wouldn't be the way to go! But seriously, my whole kit was secondhand for about £120, not bad really.

All depends on you really, if you want to spend 3x that on kit then go for it, not always necessary in my opinion though. Then you can keep the money for when you most certainly will want to modify your bike

Oh and welcome to the .org!

Hi Ryan,
Welcome mate, i'm fairly new myself to the forum.
Personally, i would buy textile as it generally ticks all the boxes (hate that phrase) that you need when first going on the road, price, comfort, safety etc
I went with textile at first and now my budget has improved i have bought some leather stuff to use in the warmer months.
I think reasonable priced textiles are better than cheapo leather in my opinion.

Hi mate,

Full kit for £120 is awesome! Yeah, at the end of the day second hand is going to be a lot cheaper but it's just trying to find the right size and style. I'll have a look around lots of places though because I've got at least a couple of months till I'll have a bike.

Hi mate, cheers for the welcome

I'll have a look at some textiles then. What are some alright brands for textile jackets and trousers?

Sorry for all the questions but it's just that I'm a real newbie to all this and I don't want to be buying ****e gear!

Cheers, Ryan

Ryan,
I bought ixon gear , trousers, jacket.
I think i paid £110 for my trousers which i still wear with my leather jacket, £160 for my jacket .
I would recommend these as they seem well built and have plenty of armour in for safety.
Got mine from bikers world in coleshill, but they have other stores as well as online shop.

Reasonable leathers - 200 quid upwards
Good gloves - 35 quid upwards
Decent helmet - 100 quid upwards
Boots - 80 quid upwards

That is the bare minimum I would recommend any newbie spend on riding kit, unless they buy good quality used stuff. Buy cheap gear is a false economy as it rarely lasts as well as decent stuff and you replace it twice in the time it takes to trash good stuff.

I'd pop down to Hein Gericke and have a browse through their shop, or look at the new Akito range of leathers or textiles as the quality control is now very good indeed. Helmets are a big issue with me, and I'd recommend you avoid Cabergs as the interiors get baggy very quickly, avoid AGVs as the build quality is bloody abysmal, avoid unheard of makes from like B-Square from Lidl etc as they will never last and the vents will fall off.

Nitro do some good quality - good value lids, as do HJC and even the cheaper RSTs. However, you only get one head so I'd advise on spending a little more and going for one of the cheaper Arais or Shoeis, which start at about 200 quid in plain colours. Gloves from Hein Gericke are always good, as are their boots. Leathers and textiles from Gericke aren't as good as they were a few years back, but Teknic are excellent quality for the money, and so are Wolf. You can fnd some old stock bargains kicking around because every manufacturer was overstocked last year and no-one's buying anything at the moment. I quite like the Akito ranges at the moment and I know for a fact they are shifting stock at silly prices to dealers so search out some bargains.

I wouldn't trust cheapo textiles, especially not when they're more expensive than a mint pair of used leathers.
