Keep oiling it and cleaning it, I had one that was similarly shagged and after I'd got all the rust off/out of it it lasted another 5k miles before it was totally f##ked and needing adjusting every 100 miles.

I use a Vernier Caliper and just use the Tail of it as a Depth Gauge , I measure from the top of the Adjuster bolt to the end plate on the swingarm , it`s accurate enough ..... especially after taking the adjuster guides out first to make sure both had the same length of threaded studding welded to each guide

Thanks for the replies - it sounds like it shouldn't be in imminent danger of snapping / falling off the sprocket, so I'll run with it for a while and give it plenty of tlc.

Now I just need to go and fix my speedo which is what I was supposed to be doing before I started the 5 minute (!) chain adjustment job. I'll probably manage to turn that into a three week job...

Cheers

You sure your not trying to measure slack while in gear? Tight spots shouldnt as said cause any issues with slack... just make for a crappy ride, feels like the engine is running dead choppy.

Scottoiler is the way forward imo. My chain is reletivly clean, slack as they come (asin easy to wagle up and down) and feels dead smooth.

Cheers.

It permanently reads zero, apart from a couple of times at "motorway speeds" where it popped up to 2 mph. From reading a number of posts on here, sounds like it's most likely to be the rotor so I've bought a new one - hope that's what's wrong.

It's in neutral - the tight spots seem to have eased off now, but they were actually seized in a kinked position, so I guess this effectively shortened the chain at those points. This is what made me wonder if this could have created uneven wear, making the chain different lengths for the same pitch depending on how the chain had worn while the links were seized (if that makes sense).

Cheers

My Speedo developed a fault after I balanced my Throttle Bodies , it turned out to not be the Rotor but the Green coloured connector on the right hand side of the Airbox ..... just something else for you to bear in mind , My Speedo just dropped to Zero , a quick check of the wiring and it was ok again after finding the break in the cable , just something else to keep in mind .

Cheers xXBADGERXx - it's a nekkid so I'd checked the connector in the headlamp. Took it apart today and the rotor was in bits - sorted now though.

Still can't figure out why the chain slack varies so much from tightest point to slackest point, but I'll see how it goes over the next couple of weeks.

Cheers
