Thanks, that's mighty nice. Diodes are mostly used as a sort of one way valve in dc circuits. A dc current passes through it one way but doesn't if the polarity is reversed. You can check a diode with an ohm meter, it gives an indication of a low resistance one way and zero resistance when reversing your test leads.

If the bike starts ok whilst in neutral but stalls when you switch into gear then stand switch faulty.
No the sidestand switch is functioning as it should if it starts in neutral but stalls when you put in into gear if the stand's down. If the stand's up, however (which I'm guessing is what you mean come to think of it) and it stalls then that switch is a very likely culprit.

If your neutral light is not lighting in your dash then the bike won't start with the stand switch open.
(if the bulb's fine, yes)

A question.
The service manual says that there's a diode inside the stand switch. I don't know what this is for and can only guess that it's a protection for a reversed battery. Anyone know more?
Glad you've got it running again mate. So satisfying, I find, when you solve a problem
I'm not sure about the diode, but as you say, they are normally used for protection in the event of the current flowing in the wrong direction, so that would be my guess too.
