I know someone who arranges loans on the 'door knock' for a big loans company. They entice people by arranging 'Argos vouchers' and suchlike at stupid rates.

When the economy is good he arranges loans, when the economy is bad he goes out repossessing cars. Either way he makes a small fortune from other people's misery.

When I was recently unemployed he once asked me to go and work with him, but I told him I couldn't because I have priniciples and moral standards. I've been absolutely and desperately skint in the not too distant past, and I always look on those people taking out loans and think "there but for the grace of an un-named and un-proven deity, go I"

as a bit of a derail, but following Lissa's links, I stumble across credit unions. Having read the hampshire credit union website, it all looks above board and FSA regulated, and like the idea of investing some savings in one, seeing as they make ethical loans, all profit back to members, no fat cats etc. Anyone know more about these, their security etc?

Not Provident Lissa...although I'm sure they are just as bad. The company I'm taking to court don't do loans for £500....they can do loans up to £10k, no credit check. It's stupidity at it's worst and I totally agree with Lozzo......it's the most immoral form of lending because not only do they not publicse the fact they have a standard interest rate of 64%apr. They advertise something like 18.9% but in the small print it says that is for customers that meet certain criteria.

I just wanted to warn the orgers that's all. Be careful......there are some real vultures out there. Worst thing is, someone took out two loans in my name with this one company, totalling £9k. They've got away with the cash and I've had carp to deal with for all this time!!!
